PopCap Games Refutes Generative AI Use in ‘Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted’ Amidst Launch Day Concerns

TLDR: PopCap Games has officially denied using generative AI in the recently launched ‘Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted’ remaster. The clarification comes after early access players raised concerns about the game’s unfinished state, including alleged AI-generated concept art and audio issues. The developer stated the game was not ‘quite finished’ during early access and is committed to ongoing updates to address player feedback.

PopCap Games has issued a definitive statement refuting claims of generative artificial intelligence (AI) integration in their highly anticipated remaster, ‘Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted’. The game, a refreshed version of the beloved 2009 tower defense classic, officially launched on October 23, 2025, across multiple platforms, including PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, priced at $19.99.

The controversy ignited following unintended early access for some players, who reported a range of issues. Among the most prominent concerns were allegations of generative AI being used for concept art and the presence of incorrect music in various stages. PopCap Games acknowledged these early access instances, clarifying that the game was ‘not quite finished’ at that point. ‘While we find it super exciting to see fans on the Lawn already, we hadn’t quite finished getting the lawn ready yet for our 10/23 launch date. In fact, you will continue to see the game updated as the team is hard at work putting the final touches on the Lawn leading up to our global release,’ the company stated.

Addressing the generative AI accusations directly, PopCap Games explicitly denied its use. The developer further explained that some of the concept art showcased was created after the original ‘Plants vs. Zombies 1’ launched in 2009. This art was included to highlight the broader legacy of the ‘Plants vs. Zombies’ intellectual property and the many subsequent games it inspired, rather than being indicative of AI generation for the remaster itself. ‘Plants vs. Zombies is a beloved IP that has seen hundreds of passionate artists and developers contribute to it over the past 16 years, and as we work to bring that all together in PVZ: Replanted, we want to make sure we are giving you the best experience possible,’ PopCap emphasized.

Beyond the AI debate, players also provided feedback on various gameplay changes. PopCap acknowledged the ‘delicate balance’ required to maintain the essence of the 16-year-old original while ensuring it functions effectively in a modern gaming context. The studio confirmed it is ‘already hard at work to deliver the game we all know and love, specifically when it comes to the audio, and the more nuanced actions of our characters (looking at you, Dr Z!).’
