A fresh political storm has engulfed India following the circulation of an AI-generated video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother, Heeraben Modi. The controversy began when a BJP worker, Sanket Gupta, filed a police complaint against the Congress party in Delhi, alleging defamation and violation of law over the video. The complaint was lodged at the North Avenue police station on Friday, September 12, 2025, with Delhi Police confirming the matter is under review, though no FIR has been registered yet.
The contentious 36-second clip, explicitly marked ‘AI GENERATED,’ was posted on September 10 by the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Bihar Congress unit. It portrays Prime Minister Modi in a dream sequence where his deceased mother appears, expressing criticism of his political actions, particularly in the context of the upcoming Bihar elections. The video is titled ‘Maa appears in sahab’s dreams.’
BJP leaders have vehemently condemned the video, calling it ‘cheap politics’ and an ‘insult to women.’ Sanket Gupta, in his complaint, stated that the video damaged the reputation of both the Prime Minister and his late mother, asserting it violated legal provisions, moral values, and the dignity of women. He demanded an FIR be registered against Congress and its office-bearers under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and called for platform X to remove the content.
Senior BJP figures were quick to react with outrage. Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma dismissed the video as ‘pure frustration’ and ‘desperation’ stemming from an impending electoral defeat. Former Union Minister and BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad criticized the Congress for stooping ‘so low as to make memes of a deceased mother who had nothing to do with politics.’ BJP Mumbai chief Ashish Shelar echoed these sentiments, stating that such ‘cheap and low-level tactics’ are used when parties run out of real issues, and vowed that Congress would ‘pay the price for it in Bihar.’ Union Minister Giriraj Singh also slammed the Congress, calling the act ‘fraudulent and immoral’ and emphasizing that Heeraben Modi was a humble woman who had no connection to politics.
Bihar’s ruling coalition partner, Janata Dal (United) leader Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, also criticized the opposition, noting that it ‘shows how deeply frustration has seeped into the opposition ranks.’ The BJP has announced its intention to take the matter to the Election Commission.
In response, Pawan Khera, who heads the Congress party’s media and publicity department, defended the video. He questioned the BJP’s objection, stating, ‘What is their objection? Just because a mother is trying to educate her son to do something right, where is the disrespect? This is neither disrespectful to the mother, whom we respect dearly, nor to the son.’
