TLDR: Plexision, a biotechnology company, has received a $365,000 investment from the Richard King Mellon Foundation. This funding will be used to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) into its cell-based blood tests, aiming to improve the predictive accuracy for complex transplant outcomes, including rejection subtypes and post-transplant infections.
Plexision, a leading biotechnology firm, has announced a significant $365,000 investment from the Richard King Mellon Foundation. This capital injection is earmarked for the accelerated integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capabilities into Plexision’s existing suite of cell-based blood tests. The primary objective of this initiative is to substantially enhance the predictive accuracy for complex transplant outcomes.
Transplant medicine, despite its advancements, faces a persistent challenge in managing immunosuppressive drugs. A delicate balance must be maintained: insufficient medication can lead to organ rejection (either cell- or antibody-mediated), while excessive doses increase the risk of infections, such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and in some cases, lymphoma. Traditional testing methods often provide limited insight into a patient’s immune status, offering only reactive, binary results that necessitate clinicians to integrate additional clinical data for treatment decisions.
Plexision is poised to redefine transplant diagnostics through its innovative approach. Their blood tests are designed to predict the most common rejection subtypes and post-transplant infections. These tests operate on a unified platform of immune cell function. When combined with machine learning, this advanced test panel can rank the risks of multiple outcomes for each patient. This includes predicting the likelihoods of stable graft function, T-cell-mediated and antibody-mediated rejection, and the presence or absence of infection, including infection-related lymphoma.
These capabilities have undergone rigorous development and validation through multi-center studies. The findings from these studies are slated to be presented at the World Transplant Congress, scheduled to take place in San Francisco, CA, from August 2-6, 2025.

Dr. Rakesh Sindhi, a transplant surgeon, Co-founder, and Chief Scientific Officer at Plexision, emphasized the company’s transformative role, stating, “Plexision is redefining transplant diagnostics by predicting rejection subtypes and infection risks using blood tests derived from a single immune cell function platform.” He further highlighted that the expanded application of AI will significantly enhance the platform’s ability to rank and predict the likelihood of various outcomes in individual patients, thereby serving as a powerful clinical decision support tool for healthcare providers delivering precision transplant medicine. The company’s proprietary technology delivers results rapidly, typically within 6 to 24 hours, facilitating timely intervention. All tests are conducted at Plexision’s CLIA-approved and CAP-accredited reference laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA, utilizing blood samples shipped from clinical partners. The results are then used in conjunction with other clinical data to optimize the management of individual transplant patients.
