Pinterest Introduces Enhanced Controls for User Management of Generative AI Content

TLDR: Pinterest has rolled out new tools allowing users to significantly reduce or filter the amount of generative AI (GenAI) content appearing in their feeds. This update, driven by user feedback regarding the increasing prevalence of AI-generated material, aims to give individuals greater control over their personalized experience on the platform, balancing human creativity with AI innovation.

Pinterest has announced the launch of new user controls designed to empower its community to manage the influx of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) content within their feeds. This strategic move comes in direct response to widespread user feedback expressing concerns over the proliferation of AI-generated material, which Pinterest notes now constitutes an ‘incredible 57%’ of all online content.

The core of this new functionality is an ‘upgraded tuner’ that allows users to ‘dial down’ the amount of GenAI content they encounter. This feature is particularly focused on eligible image Pins in categories highly susceptible to AI modification or generation, such as beauty, art, fashion, and home decor.

Users can access these preferences through their settings by navigating to the ‘refine your recommendations’ tab. Alternatively, if a user encounters a Pin that doesn’t align with their desired aesthetic, they can tap the three-dot overflow menu on the Pin and select a category to adjust their preferences. The company emphasizes that these controls are designed to reduce, rather than entirely eliminate, AI-generated content, aiming for a balanced experience.

Matt Madrigal, Chief Technology Officer at Pinterest, underscored the company’s commitment to its user base, stating, “Our community is at the heart of everything we do. With our new GenAI controls, we’re empowering people to personalize their Pinterest experience more than ever—striking the right balance between human creativity and AI innovation, and ensuring every feed truly reflects what inspires them most.”

The rollout of these new controls began with Android and desktop operating systems and is expected to gradually become available for iOS devices in the coming weeks.

User sentiment has played a crucial role in prompting this update. Anonymous reviews on platforms like the Apple Store earlier this year highlighted frustrations, with users describing AI pins as ‘cluttering up Pinterest’ and making it ‘impossible to find real stories that happened, real images that people photographed.’ Others called for Pinterest to ‘advocate for the artists, designers and content creators’ by addressing the ‘out of control’ nature of AI-generated posts.
