Perplexity AI Targets $20 Billion Valuation in New Funding Round, Eyes Google Chrome Acquisition

TLDR: Perplexity AI, the generative AI-powered ‘answer engine,’ is reportedly seeking a new funding round that would value the company at $20 billion. This represents a $2 billion increase from its July 2025 valuation of $18 billion. The substantial capital raise is purportedly aimed at funding Perplexity’s audacious $34.5 billion all-cash offer to acquire Google’s Chrome web browser, a move that could significantly reshape the tech landscape.

Perplexity AI, the rapidly ascending artificial intelligence startup, is reportedly in discussions for a new funding round that aims to push its valuation to an impressive $20 billion. This potential valuation marks a significant $2 billion increase from its previous $18 billion valuation achieved in July 2025, underscoring the intense investor interest in AI-driven search technologies.

According to reports from Business Insider, citing an internal email sent to prospective investors and sources familiar with the matter, the company is actively engaging with potential backers. This latest funding initiative comes amidst a period of remarkable growth for Perplexity AI, which was founded in 2022. The company has positioned itself as an ‘answer engine,’ leveraging generative AI to provide direct, cited responses to user queries, a direct challenge to traditional search engines like Google.

Perplexity’s financial trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric. Its valuation has surged by an astounding 3,746% since January 2024, when it stood at $520 million. This rapid escalation includes a $9 billion valuation in December 2024 following a $500 million funding round, and a $14 billion valuation in May 2025. The company boasts over 22 million monthly active users and an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $80 million, attracting high-profile investors such as Jeff Bezos.

A significant driver behind this new funding round appears to be Perplexity’s bold strategic ambition: an unsolicited $34.5 billion all-cash offer to acquire Google LLC’s Chrome web browser. This bid, reportedly made on August 12, 2025, is particularly noteworthy given that Chrome is not currently for sale. However, the browser is a subject of an ongoing antitrust case against Google in the U.S., where a district court judge could potentially mandate its divestiture. Perplexity claims that several large venture-capital funds have agreed to back the transaction in full if it were to proceed. This move, while described by some as a publicity stunt, highlights Perplexity’s intent to disrupt the web search and browsing ecosystem. Other major players, including OpenAI, Apollo Global Management, and Yahoo, are also reportedly interested in acquiring Chrome.

Perplexity has already made strides in the browsing space, having launched its own AI-powered browser, ‘Comet,’ with a built-in AI assistant on July 9, 2025. Furthermore, the company announced a partnership with Coinbase on July 10, 2025, aimed at enhancing crypto insights. While the latest funding round’s lead investor remains undisclosed, and questions linger about the immediate necessity of additional capital so soon after its last raise, Perplexity AI’s aggressive expansion and valuation targets signal its strong determination to become a dominant force in the evolving AI and internet landscape.
