Perplexity AI Launches Dedicated Services for U.S. Government Agencies

TLDR: Perplexity AI has officially introduced “Perplexity for Government” and “Perplexity Enterprise Pro for Government,” aiming to provide secure and tailored AI-powered search capabilities to federal workers. The initiative addresses the growing use of public AI tools by government employees and offers enhanced data protection, including a “zero data usage” policy. The company is also in discussions with the General Services Administration (GSA) to formalize its offerings, with a special pricing model for agencies.

Perplexity AI, an emerging force in the AI-powered search engine market, has announced its strategic entry into the U.S. government sector with the launch of “Perplexity for Government” and a specialized “Perplexity Enterprise Pro for Government” offering. This move, unveiled on September 8, 2025, is designed to cater to the increasing demand for artificial intelligence tools within federal agencies while prioritizing data security and compliance.

The “Perplexity for Government” initiative will automatically detect federal networks and provide users with secure access to its advanced AI models. A cornerstone of this offering is a “zero data usage” policy, meaning Perplexity will not store, maintain, or use any federal queries for model training or other undisclosed purposes. This is a significant step, as the company acknowledges that many government workers are already utilizing public AI platforms, potentially exposing sensitive data due to a lack of inherent protections.

Jerry Ma, Perplexity’s Vice President of Policy and Global Affairs, emphasized the current landscape, stating, “A universal truth about these public platforms is one, feds are using them. Two, feds are getting value out of them, but not nearly as much as they could if they were using the frontier technologies.”

Thousands of government employees are reportedly already accessing Perplexity’s public platforms using .gov or .mil email domains. Perplexity is actively engaged in discussions with the General Services Administration (GSA) to formalize its product offerings within the federal market.

For agencies seeking a more comprehensive solution, “Perplexity Enterprise Pro for Government” will be available at a cost of $0.25 per agency. This offering includes a 15-month runway, which agencies can initiate at any point within the current administration. Perplexity asserts that it is the only AI company to offer “opt-in” security by default for government workers, contrasting with other providers that may require specific product selections for enhanced security.

The platform leverages large language models from various providers, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity’s proprietary Sonar model. Federal workers logged into a government network or using a federal email domain will gain access to enterprise-level security across these top models, with protections intended to extend to military and related domains.

This expansion aligns with the broader push by the Trump administration to encourage the use of generative AI within the federal workforce to streamline tasks and workflows. The GSA has also launched its OneGov initiative, aiming to provide agencies with easier access to IT tools through standardized terms and pricing. While Perplexity’s government-focused effort is currently separate from the OneGov initiative, it seeks to address similar needs for secure and discounted AI solutions.

It is important to note that Perplexity does not yet appear on the FedRAMP Marketplace, indicating that its cloud services are not yet officially authorized for federal use.
