TLDR: PayPal has announced the integration of Mastercard Agent Pay into its digital wallet, significantly expanding their partnership to facilitate secure and seamless AI-driven transactions. This collaboration aims to enable artificial intelligence agents to complete purchases on behalf of PayPal users, bringing agentic commerce to hundreds of millions of consumers and tens of millions of merchants globally.
In a significant move poised to redefine the landscape of digital payments, PayPal Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: PYPL) and Mastercard Inc. (NYSE: MA) have deepened their long-standing partnership by integrating Mastercard Agent Pay into PayPal’s widely used digital wallet. This strategic alliance, announced on October 27, 2025, is designed to accelerate the adoption of secure, global agentic commerce, allowing artificial intelligence agents to execute transactions on behalf of PayPal users.
The integration means that AI agents will be able to access Mastercard cardholders’ payment credentials securely through PayPal checkout systems wherever PayPal is accepted. This capability extends to the millions of Mastercard cards already on file across the PayPal platform, as well as co-branded credit and debit cards. The companies project that this service will be available to hundreds of millions of consumers and tens of millions of merchants worldwide.
A core component of this collaboration involves PayPal piloting Mastercard’s Agent Pay Acceptance Framework. This framework is crucial for co-developing and testing the technology with agents and merchants in the market, ensuring compatibility and interoperability with Mastercard systems and common agentic protocols. It will also enable robust AI agent verification and secure data exchange, aligning with recently announced agentic protocols.
Security is a paramount focus of this initiative. The payment process will leverage Mastercard’s advanced tokenization and passkey authentication technologies, ensuring that consumers can safely authorize their AI agents to make purchases. Users will still need to verify their identity before transactions are finalized, adding an essential layer of protection. For merchants, the integration is designed to be frictionless; those who already offer PayPal checkout can participate in AI-driven commerce without complex additional technical requirements, which is expected to reduce friction, improve conversion rates, and help lower cart abandonment.
Sherri Haymond, Co-President of Global Partnerships at Mastercard, emphasized the transformative potential of this partnership, stating, “Our work with PayPal is driving a catalyst for agentic innovation at global scale, empowering merchants and consumers to transact with confidence, speed, and trust.” Michelle Gill, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Small Business & Financial Services at PayPal, echoed this sentiment, noting that the partnership enables merchants and consumers to participate in AI-driven commerce “with trust and flexibility at the center.”
This collaboration positions Mastercard’s Agent Pay technology at the heart of an emerging ecosystem connecting wallets, merchants, and intelligent systems, giving both companies a significant foothold in what many believe will be the next frontier of digital payments. Pablo Fourez, Mastercard’s Chief Digital Officer, highlighted the rapid progression of agentic AI from pilot to practice, indicating that the first wave of agentic experiences is likely to debut during the 2025 holiday shopping season. He described this as a “paradigm shift in how commerce is done,” underscoring the importance of engaging partners across the industry to ensure secure and scalable agentic commerce.
