Organic Search Retains Dominance as BrightEdge Reports AI Search Under 1% of Referral Traffic

TLDR: New data from BrightEdge reveals that while AI search platforms are experiencing rapid growth, they still account for less than 1% of referral traffic. Organic search continues to be the primary driver of conversions and overall web traffic, prompting marketers to integrate AI readiness with proven SEO strategies.

SAN MATEO, Calif. – September 12, 2025 – BrightEdge, a leading provider in AI-driven organic search and digital marketing automation, has released new research indicating a significant trend in the digital landscape: AI search is growing at an unprecedented rate, yet traditional organic search remains the dominant force for driving conversions and web traffic.

The research, which analyzed data from January through August 2025, shows that visits originating from AI search platforms have surged with double-digit month-over-month increases. This explosive growth highlights the rapid evolution of AI in reshaping how users discover information online. However, despite this rapid expansion, AI search currently contributes less than 1% of total referral traffic.

Jim Yu, Founder and CEO of BrightEdge, commented on the findings, stating, “AI search is the fastest-growing channel we’ve ever tracked. But growth and quality are two different things. Organic search continues to outperform on conversions and remains the engine of digital growth. The most successful marketers aren’t choosing one over the other — they’re adapting for AI while doubling down on the organic strategies that have always driven results.”

BrightEdge’s analysis, which included thousands of queries and top-performing websites, including many Fortune 100 brands, underscores that organic search continues to deliver significantly stronger conversions. This suggests that while AI is transforming discovery, it has not yet translated into a primary driver of sales or business growth in the same way organic search does.

In response to this evolving landscape, BrightEdge has introduced two major product innovations to assist marketers: the AI Early Detection System and AI Catalyst. The AI Early Detection System offers next-generation analytics reporting, providing real-time insights into how AI search contributes to traffic, leads, and revenue. This tool enables marketers to identify shifts early and measure the return on investment of their AI strategies. Meanwhile, AI Catalyst is designed to help brands strengthen their presence in AI search by pinpointing influential third-party voices, analyzing their impact on AI results, and generating precise action items for content and engagement strategies.
