Opera, a prominent player in the web browser market, has unveiled a significant innovation with its ‘Browser Operator,’ an AI-powered agent poised to redefine how users interact with the internet. Announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025, this new feature represents a fundamental shift from browsers merely displaying content to actively performing tasks for users.
Krystian Kolondra, Executive Vice President at Opera, emphasized this paradigm shift, stating, ‘For over 30 years, browsers have allowed users to access the internet, but they’ve never actually done things *for* users. Now, they can. This is unlike anything we’ve seen or launched before.’ He added that the Browser Operator ‘marks the first step towards shifting the role of the browser from a display engine to an application that is agentic and performs tasks for its users.’
The Browser Operator is designed with core AI capabilities including autonomy, perception, decision-making, action execution, and adaptive learning. Users can simply describe their desired tasks using natural language, and the agent will automatically execute them. Examples provided include complex, multi-step actions such as purchasing specific items like ‘a pair of size 8.5 pink Nike running shoes’ or booking a restaurant table.
A key differentiator for Opera’s Browser Operator is its strong emphasis on user privacy and local processing. Unlike many AI assistants that rely on cloud processing or screen capture, Opera’s solution operates natively within the browser, leveraging the Document Object Model (DOM) tree and browser layout data for contextual information. This approach ensures that sensitive user data remains on the device, as it doesn’t send information to the cloud, capture screenshots, or rely on virtual machines. This client-side processing also contributes to faster response times.
Opera has been steadily moving towards an AI-centric browser experience, having redesigned its flagship browser in 2023 and launching its ‘AI Feature Drops’ program in March 2024. This program has been testing experimental AI features such as local large language models (LLMs), image generation, and AI Tab Commands. The Browser Operator is currently in a feature preview stage and is expected to roll out soon through Opera’s feature update program.
