OpenText Report: Ransomware Attacks Impact Over Half of Indian Businesses in 2024, AI-Driven Threats Intensify

TLDR: A recent OpenText survey reveals that over half of Indian enterprises experienced ransomware attacks in the past year, positioning India as a highly targeted and AI-exposed market globally. The report highlights a significant surge in AI-driven phishing and deepfake attempts, prompting Indian organizations to prioritize cloud security, network protection, and backup technologies for 2026.

A new report from OpenText, a global leader in secure information management for AI, has unveiled alarming statistics regarding the cybersecurity landscape in India. The company’s fourth annual Global Ransomware Survey, released on November 3, 2025, indicates that over half of Indian enterprises were subjected to ransomware attacks in the past year. This places India among the most targeted and AI-exposed markets worldwide, with more than 7 out of 10 (71%) organizations reporting a rise in AI-driven phishing or deepfake attempts.

The survey, which gathered insights from nearly 1,800 security practitioners and business leaders across seven countries, including over 200 from India, found that ransomware incidents remain widespread. A concerning finding is that nearly 70% of affected Indian organizations admitted to paying a ransom to regain access to their data, one of the highest rates globally.

Despite the persistent threats, a striking 98.6% of Indian respondents expressed confidence in their organization’s ability to recover from such attacks. This suggests a potential disconnect between perceived resilience and the actual exposure to sophisticated cyber threats.

The report further underscores the escalating role of artificial intelligence in both offensive and defensive cybersecurity strategies. Beyond the 71% observing an increase in AI-linked phishing or ransomware, 66% of Indian organizations encountered deepfake-style impersonation attacks, such as voice and video spoofing. This surge in AI-enabled threats coincides with an overwhelming majority of organizations (95%) allowing employees to use generative AI tools, yet just over half have formal AI-use or data privacy policies in place.

Muhi Majzoub, Executive Vice President, Security Products at OpenText, commented on the findings, stating, “Organizations are right to be confident in their progress in security posture, but they can’t afford to be complacent.” He emphasized the need for businesses to proactively defend against sophisticated threats like supply chain vulnerabilities and AI-driven attacks, while ensuring resilience through data backups and response plans.

Encouragingly, the perception of ransomware is shifting from an isolated IT concern to a board-level business risk, with 84% of Indian executive teams considering it among their top three business risks—a figure higher than the global average of 71%. In response, Indian organizations are strengthening their cybersecurity posture, with cloud security (68%), network protection (60%), and backup technologies (58%) identified as top priorities for 2026. Furthermore, 80% of organizations conduct regular security awareness training, and over 76% test their ransomware recovery plans multiple times a year, reflecting enhanced cyber readiness across leadership and operations.
