OpenAI’s GPT-5 Unleashed: A New Era of AI Capabilities and Economic Potential

TLDR: OpenAI has launched GPT-5, hailed by CEO Sam Altman as a ‘significant step’ towards artificial general intelligence (AGI). The new model, described as having ‘PhD-level experts in your pocket,’ is expected to revolutionize various industries, from healthcare to software development, and could generate a $100 billion business for OpenAI by selling tools to other companies. While initial public reception noted an evolutionary rather than revolutionary leap compared to its predecessor, GPT-5 offers enhanced intelligence, coding capabilities, and affordability.

OpenAI has officially rolled out its highly anticipated large language model, GPT-5, marking what CEO Sam Altman describes as a ‘significant step’ towards achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). The launch, which began slowly rolling out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team plans in August 2025, positions GPT-5 as a powerful tool with the potential to transform numerous sectors and unlock substantial economic value.

Altman characterized GPT-5 as akin to having ‘a team of PhD-level experts in your pocket,’ emphasizing its advanced capabilities in areas such as coding, writing, and handling complex tasks. He highlighted potential applications like physician assistants that could ‘save a lot of lives.’

Economically, Altman envisions GPT-5 fueling a massive enterprise AI boom, projecting that OpenAI could build a ‘$100 billion business line, just selling products to other businesses.’ The model aims to boost productivity and efficiency, with personalized workplace AI assistants capable of understanding individual workflows and automating repetitive tasks.

From a technical standpoint, GPT-5 is described as the smartest and fastest model to date, offering a more natural and human-like conversational style. It introduces ‘vibecoding,’ a feature allowing users to create any application by simply asking GPT-5 to code it. Developers are also expected to find GPT-5 to be the best coding model available.

Despite the high expectations, some initial public reactions suggested that GPT-5 felt more evolutionary than revolutionary compared to its predecessor, GPT-4o. Enough ChatGPT users reportedly preferred the older GPT-4o that OpenAI was prompted to restore it as an option. However, for AI agent builders, GPT-5 is undeniably smarter and more affordable, with lower input token pricing ($1.25 vs. $2 for o3) and only slightly higher output costs ($10 vs. $8), making it a compelling choice for development. Smaller versions, GPT-5 Mini and Nano, are also available at reduced costs.

Safety has been a key focus in GPT-5’s development. Safety Research Lead Alex Beutel noted that the model was built with a better foundation for safety, undergoing rigorous testing to ensure robustness against abuse and misuse.
