A groundbreaking $300 billion, five-year agreement between artificial intelligence leader OpenAI and cloud giant Oracle has sent ripples through the tech world, simultaneously propelling Oracle’s market valuation and sparking intense debate over a potential ‘AI bubble.’ The deal, reported by the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by various financial outlets, is set to provide OpenAI with massive cloud computing power, primarily for its ambitious ‘Project Stargate,’ an initiative aimed at building hyperscale data centers across the U.S. capable of running the most advanced AI models. The contract is expected to commence in 2027.

Oracle’s announcement of the deal, alongside a projection of $455 billion in future contracts over the next five years—a staggering 359% increase from the previous year—triggered an immediate and significant market reaction. Oracle’s stock (ORCL) surged by 26% in a single week, with some reports indicating a 36% jump in a single day, briefly elevating Chairman Larry Ellison to the status of the world’s richest person. This optimism is partly attributed to Oracle’s strategic partnership with Nvidia, which has secured it a substantial supply of crucial Nvidia GPUs, positioning Oracle as a rising force in AI infrastructure despite previously trailing other cloud giants.

However, the colossal sum involved has prompted prominent voices to warn of an impending ‘AI bubble.’ Benjamin Lee, a professor of engineering and computer science at the University of Pennsylvania, characterized the development as a ‘risky gamble’ for both companies, suggesting it indicates a broader overinvestment in data center capacity. Lee, who has consulted for tech giants like Meta Platforms Inc. and Alphabet Inc., expressed concerns that if demand for AI workloads diminishes, investors could face prolonged waits for returns. He highlighted the uncertainty surrounding future AI inferencing workloads, which depend heavily on the pace of ‘technology uptake’ among individuals and enterprises. Without a clear ‘killer AI app’ to drive demand, cloud infrastructure spending could outpace actual technology adoption.

Echoing these sentiments, AI expert Gary Marcus, a long-standing critic of potential AI overvaluation, reportedly called the OpenAI-Oracle deal ‘peak bubble.’ Concerns are further fueled by the significant financial risks, as OpenAI’s current revenue, projected at $12.7 billion this year, is considerably smaller than the $300 billion contract value. Industry analysts anticipate the deal will be structured in stages, potentially involving financing from investors like SoftBank and partnerships with chipmakers such as Broadcom, with whom OpenAI reportedly has a $10 billion contract to design its own AI chip.
