OpenAI Initiates Localized Pricing for ChatGPT in India, Introduces Rupee-Based Plans and Hints at Budget-Friendly ‘ChatGPT Go’

TLDR: OpenAI has begun piloting local pricing for its ChatGPT subscription services in India, allowing users to pay in Indian Rupees for the first time. The ChatGPT Plus plan is now available at ₹1,999 per month, with Pro and Team plans also localized. Additionally, reports suggest a new, more affordable ‘ChatGPT Go’ plan is on the horizon, potentially priced at ₹399 per month, aimed at casual users and students.

OpenAI, the developer behind the popular artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, has commenced a pilot program for localized pricing in India, marking a significant shift towards making its services more accessible to the country’s rapidly expanding user base. This move allows Indian subscribers to pay for ChatGPT plans directly in Indian Rupees, a departure from the previous US dollar-based billing system.

Under the new pilot program, the ChatGPT Plus plan is now priced at ₹1,999 per month, inclusive of Goods and Services Tax (GST). For professional and enterprise users, the higher-tier Pro plan is set at ₹19,900 per month, while the Team plan is available at ₹2,099 per seat per month. This contrasts with the previous pricing structure where Indian users paid approximately $20 (around ₹1,750) for Plus, $200 (around ₹17,500) for Pro, and $30 (around ₹2,600) per seat for the Team plan, all in US dollars.

In a further effort to broaden its appeal, reports indicate that OpenAI is also exploring the introduction of a more budget-friendly tier named ‘ChatGPT Go.’ This potential new plan is rumored to be priced at an accessible ₹399 per month. The ‘ChatGPT Go’ plan is expected to target casual users, students, and first-time subscribers who seek AI assistance without committing to the premium subscription costs. Some early sightings of this plan have appeared in the ChatGPT web app in select regions, including India, showing expanded messaging and uploads compared to the free tier, along with limited deep research and extended advanced data analysis.

The initiative to localize pricing stems from direct feedback received by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman during his visit to India in February 2025. Startup founders and developers in India had highlighted that the dollar-based pricing created a significant barrier to wider adoption of ChatGPT within the country. Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI’s Vice President of Engineering, had previously affirmed the company’s commitment to making its tools more affordable for Indian developers, aligning with its global mission for improved accessibility.

India has emerged as OpenAI’s second-largest market outside the United States, with Altman himself suggesting that it could soon surpass the US in ChatGPT usage. This strategic localization also comes shortly after the launch of GPT-5, OpenAI’s most advanced model to date, which boasts enhanced performance across 12 Indian languages, further solidifying the relevance of these services for the Indian market.

While the local pricing aims to simplify payments and make the service more relevant, it also reflects OpenAI’s response to the growing competition in the AI market, particularly in price-sensitive regions like India.
