TLDR: OpenAI is significantly expanding its operations in India, driven by the unexpected adoption of AI tools like ChatGPT among rural farmers and frontline workers. Pragya Misra, OpenAI’s Public Policy and Partnerships Lead, announced plans for team expansion and new initiatives, including the launch of an India office. Early data suggests a 35% increase in farmer income due to AI-assisted decision-making in crop selection, pest management, and market access. India’s large developer base is also poised to play a crucial role in global AI innovation, with India-inspired features like ChatGPT Go already making a worldwide impact.
OpenAI, the global leader in generative artificial intelligence, is set to significantly deepen its footprint in India, with key announcements on team expansion and new initiatives expected in the coming weeks. This strategic move comes as rural Indian farmers and frontline workers are emerging as early and impactful adopters of AI tools, including ChatGPT, driving tangible improvements in incomes and access to vital information.
Pragya Misra, OpenAI’s Public Policy and Partnerships Lead, highlighted this trend during the CNN News18’s SheShakti2025 summit on August 21. Misra, who has been the sole OpenAI employee in India, confirmed that the company is on the verge of establishing its first official office in the country. She stated, ‘You will see a lot of announcements coming up in the next few weeks where you will see a lot of commitment to India, and we will be expanding our team and doing a lot more here.’
India, with its vast pool of over 15 million developers, already boasts the world’s largest developer base. Misra emphasized that the nation is expected to play a central role in shaping the future of AI innovation globally. The expansion aims to develop features specifically tailored for the Indian market, which can then be scaled and rolled out worldwide. As examples of India-inspired tools that have achieved global reach, Misra cited ‘ChatGPT Go’ and ‘Study Mode’.
Addressing critical concerns regarding affordability and access, OpenAI recently launched ‘ChatGPT Go’ in India at a competitive price of Rs. 399 per month. This initiative represents OpenAI’s most affordable plan to date, designed to democratize access to advanced AI capabilities for a broader audience across the country.
The impact of AI on the agricultural sector is particularly noteworthy. In an interview with MoneyControl, Misra revealed that rural India’s farmers are actively leveraging OpenAI models to make informed decisions on various aspects of farming. This includes selecting appropriate crops, effectively managing pests, choosing optimal fertilizers, and identifying the best ‘mandis’ (local markets) to sell their produce. Early findings from this adoption indicate a remarkable 35% increase in farmer income.

Furthermore, the multimodal and multilingual nature of OpenAI’s tools has proven instrumental in breaking down barriers for women in rural areas. Female farmers, Anganwadi workers, and ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers are increasingly utilizing AI to enhance their productivity and decision-making processes within their communities, fostering greater empowerment and efficiency.
