The initiative is spearheaded by Chad Nelson, a creative specialist at OpenAI, who initially developed ‘Critterz’ as a short film using OpenAI’s DALL-E image generator. This initial concept has since been remastered with Sora, OpenAI’s text-to-video model, and is now being expanded into a full-length feature. Nelson emphasized the strategic importance of this project, stating, “OpenAI can say what its tools do all day long, but it’s much more impactful if someone does it. That’s a much better case study than me building a demo.”
The production model for ‘Critterz’ is a hybrid approach, blending AI efficiency with essential human oversight. While AI tools will be central to the animation process, the script has been penned by experienced writers from the team behind ‘Paddington in Peru.’ Artists will provide initial sketches to guide the AI’s visual output, and human actors are expected to be cast for voice roles.
