Nvidia’s Evolving Cloud Strategy: DGX Cloud’s Future and Lepton’s Rise Amidst AI Boom

TLDR: Nvidia is reportedly shifting its strategy regarding its DGX Cloud platform, moving from external marketing to internal use, and focusing on its Lepton GPU rental marketplace. This move, initially perceived as potentially benefiting major cloud providers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google at the expense of AI hyperscaler CoreWeave, is ultimately seen as a non-issue. All involved companies are poised for significant growth in the ongoing AI boom, reinforced by Nvidia’s multibillion-dollar stake in CoreWeave and a $6.3 billion agreement to purchase its unused cloud capacity.

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), a dominant force in the tech industry, maintains robust relationships with the world’s largest cloud service providers: Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), and Google parent Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (GOOGL). Beyond these giants, Nvidia also collaborates closely with emerging players like CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV), an AI-focused hyperscaler in which Nvidia holds a multibillion-dollar investment.

In 2023, Nvidia introduced DGX Cloud, a platform designed to offer enterprises immediate access to its AI supercomputers for training generative AI and other advanced AI models. However, recent reports from ‘The Information,’ a technology industry news website, suggest a strategic pivot. Nvidia is reportedly retreating from actively marketing DGX Cloud to external customers, instead prioritizing its use for internal operations. This shift is subtly corroborated by Nvidia’s second-quarter 2025 10-Q filings, where DGX Cloud was notably absent from discussions regarding cloud spending commitments, a departure from previous reports.

In parallel with this reported retreat, Nvidia appears to be intensifying its focus on the newly launched Lepton GPU rental marketplace. CEO Jensen Huang, in the May 2025 announcement of Lepton, articulated that this new service ‘connects our network of global GPU cloud providers with AI.’

The implications of this strategic adjustment for Nvidia’s partners have been a subject of discussion. Initially, some industry observers viewed DGX Cloud as a potential competitor to the major cloud service providers. However, it’s important to note that Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud already host DGX Cloud. While Amazon Web Services (AWS) did not, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that Nvidia’s cloud platform negatively impacted AWS’s business.

Crucially, the reported shift away from DGX Cloud marketing is not expected to adversely affect CoreWeave. Nvidia had previously rented GPUs from CoreWeave for its DGX Cloud operations. Furthermore, CoreWeave recently disclosed a substantial agreement: Nvidia will purchase $6.3 billion of CoreWeave’s unused cloud computing capacity, a commitment extending through April 13, 2032. This long-term deal provides significant financial stability and revenue for CoreWeave.

The overarching sentiment in the industry remains optimistic. The article concludes that all companies involved – Nvidia, Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and CoreWeave – are ‘poised to be big winners over the long run.’ The ‘AI boom doesn’t appear to be slowing down,’ which translates to an increased demand for Nvidia’s GPUs and sustained ‘tremendous demand’ for the cloud platforms offered by Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and CoreWeave. It is even suggested that this momentum could accelerate, with Nvidia’s continuous technological advancements playing a pivotal role. While there’s a slight acknowledgment that Nvidia ‘might not be retreating from DGX Cloud as reported by The Information after all,’ the positive outlook for all stakeholders in the AI ecosystem remains firm.
