TLDR: NVIDIA is set to invest up to $2 billion in Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, as part of a larger $20 billion funding initiative. This significant capital injection, which includes both equity and debt, will primarily finance the acquisition of NVIDIA’s advanced chips for xAI’s massive Colossus 2 data center in Memphis, bolstering the startup’s ambitious AI projects.
NVIDIA, a leading chipmaker, is making a substantial investment in Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, contributing up to $2 billion as part of a broader $20 billion funding round. This strategic move aims to significantly boost xAI’s ambitious AI projects, particularly the development and expansion of its colossal Colossus 2 data center located in Memphis.
The funding package for xAI is structured to include approximately $7.5 billion in equity and up to $12.5 billion in loans. NVIDIA’s direct equity investment of up to $2 billion is earmarked specifically for the procurement of its high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs), which are critical for powering xAI’s advanced AI workloads.
This innovative financing model involves a special purpose vehicle (SPV) that will acquire NVIDIA processors and subsequently lease them to xAI for a period of five years, ensuring a steady supply of essential hardware for the rapidly expanding AI startup. Other notable participants in this substantial financing round reportedly include Apollo Global Management and Diameter Capital Partners.
xAI has been aggressively seeking capital, having already raised around $10 billion earlier this year, and is known for its considerable operational costs, reportedly spending up to $1 billion per month.

The investment underscores NVIDIA’s commitment to maintaining its dominant position in the AI infrastructure market by securing demand for its chips within key AI development initiatives. While Elon Musk had previously indicated in September that the company was not actively raising capital, the current funding efforts highlight the continuous and immense financial requirements for cutting-edge AI development.
