According to the 2025 Threat Hunting report, North Korean workers have successfully infiltrated more than 320 companies in the last year alone, a considerable number of which are Fortune 500 firms. This is achieved by exploiting stolen or fabricated identities to secure remote IT roles. These highly trained workers, often graduates of elite Pyongyang-based schools, are deployed in teams to various international locations, including China, Russia, Nigeria, Cambodia, and the United Arab Emirates.
This illicit scheme is a substantial financial lifeline for the North Korean regime, estimated to have generated between $250 million and $600 million annually since 2018. Operatives are reportedly mandated to earn approximately $10,000 per month, performing legitimate IT work for companies primarily in the U.S. and Europe while often managing multiple jobs simultaneously. Beyond legitimate work, court records indicate that these North Korean workers have also been implicated in cyberattacks responsible for stealing nearly $3 billion in cryptocurrency, as per UN estimates.
Generative AI plays a pivotal role in the success of these operations. AI tools are employed to create compelling personas at various stages of the job application and interview process. This includes generating deepfake video interviews, facilitating multilingual communication, and assisting in the management of multiple simultaneous job roles.
