TLDR: The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has successfully deployed AI-powered traffic signal management software from Flow Labs across 2,500 intersections statewide. This initiative, now fully operational, marks the largest live statewide deployment of AI-based traffic signal software in the United States, aiming to modernize traffic operations, reduce congestion, and enhance safety without requiring new hardware.
In a significant leap towards modernizing its transportation infrastructure, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced the full deployment of an advanced AI-powered traffic signal management software solution from Flow Labs. This groundbreaking initiative now covers more than 2,500 intersections across the state, providing comprehensive insights and visibility into North Carolina’s entire signal network. The deployment, which became fully operational on July 8, 2025, is touted as the largest live statewide implementation of AI-based traffic signal software in the United States.
The new system leverages artificial intelligence to process vast volumes of real-time traffic data, including information from the transportation department’s traffic cameras and GPS data from connected vehicles. This data is then analyzed using machine learning algorithms and loaded into a singular platform designed to optimize signal timing and improve critical infrastructure planning. The primary goal is to enhance traffic flow, reduce delays, and minimize emissions caused by idling vehicles.
Jatish Patel, CEO of Flow Labs, emphasized the transformative nature of this deployment. “North Carolina didn’t just invest in a new tool, they embraced a new model for traffic operations,” Patel stated. He highlighted that Flow Labs’ AI simplifies the processing of large data volumes, offering clear insights into roadway conditions and helping state agencies achieve cost savings. Patel also noted the remarkable speed of deployment, stating that the technology was rolled out across the state’s infrastructure in a matter of weeks, a stark contrast to the years it might take with systems requiring proprietary hardware, citing Philadelphia’s ongoing decades-long modernization process as an example.
One of the key advantages of Flow Labs’ software-first approach is its ability to deliver network-wide insights and reporting capabilities from day one, without the need for new hardware installations or lengthy field studies. Engineers can now proactively detect issues before they escalate, prioritize interventions based on real-world traffic patterns, and refine signal operations more efficiently. Patel added, “This isn’t a plan or a future vision, it’s a fully deployed statewide system that’s delivering value today.”

This partnership underscores NCDOT’s commitment to innovation and its leadership in adopting cutting-edge technology to deliver immediate and measurable impacts on public safety and mobility. The system is expected to significantly improve daily commutes for North Carolina residents by reducing congestion, enhancing safety, and optimizing the overall efficiency of the state’s traffic management.
