Niantic’s Peridot Elevates Augmented Reality with Advanced Generative AI for Navigation and Interaction

TLDR: Niantic’s augmented reality companion game, Peridot, has received a significant update, integrating advanced generative AI to enhance its AR experience. Debuting at Snap’s Lens Fest, the update introduces AI-powered navigation, allowing Peridot to guide users through physical spaces, and features emotionally responsive conversational AI, powered by Hume AI, for more natural and engaging interactions. This development marks a strategic pivot for Niantic towards intelligent, spatially aware AI for real-world environments.

Niantic Spatial, a leading innovator in spatial computing and augmented reality (AR) solutions, has unveiled a transformative update for its popular AI companion, Peridot. Showcased prominently at Snap’s Lens Fest on October 16, 2025, the enhancements leverage cutting-edge generative AI to deliver an unprecedented level of immersion and interaction within the AR experience.

The core of this update lies in Peridot’s newfound ability to act as an intelligent, real-world guide. The AI companion now boasts advanced navigation capabilities, enabling it to lead users through physical environments. Attendees at Lens Fest were able to experience this firsthand, interacting with Peridot to receive directions to various points of interest and featured experiences within the venue. As Peridot navigates alongside the user, it provides contextual information through natural, emotionally adaptive dialogue, making the interaction remarkably lifelike and engaging. This sophisticated conversational AI is powered by Hume AI’s EVI technology.

This development builds upon Niantic Spatial’s earlier initiatives, including Project Jade, which equipped Peridot with visual perception through Snap’s Spectacles, spatial understanding via Niantic’s Visual Positioning System (VPS), and foundational conversational AI for location-based interactions. To facilitate Peridot’s intelligent movement, Niantic Spatial developed an internal tool capable of converting 2D floor plans into detailed pathfinding maps. This system allows the AI companion to identify optimal routes, skillfully avoid obstacles, and respect physical boundaries in real-time. Further enhancing its real-world adaptability, the system incorporates real-time computer vision algorithms to ensure safe and accurate navigation within dynamic spaces.

Niantic’s long-term vision, as underscored by this update, is to cultivate intelligent, spatially aware AI that seamlessly integrates into everyday environments. This strategic evolution for Peridot also reflects a broader corporate shift at Niantic. Following a recent reshuffle and the sale of its games division, the company is increasingly focusing on spatial platform services and partnerships. This pivot indicates a strategic bet on licensing Peridot-style AR experiences to various device manufacturers, signaling a new direction for augmented reality’s value proposition.
