TLDR: The Artificial Intelligence Legislators’ Forum (AILF) has been established in India to bridge the gap between rapid AI innovation and legislative preparedness by providing training and resources to Members of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies.
In a significant move to align India’s legislative framework with its burgeoning artificial intelligence ecosystem, the Artificial Intelligence Legislators’ Forum (AILF) was officially launched on August 20, 2025. This new initiative aims to empower Indian lawmakers, including Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs), with the essential knowledge, tools, and networks required to effectively shape the nation’s tech policy landscape.
The Forum, a collaborative effort bringing together lawmakers, technologists, and policy experts, is designed to foster responsible AI governance and facilitate informed dialogue on critical issues such as ethical frameworks, regulatory gaps, and emerging challenges posed by AI. Future Shift Labs, a think tank dedicated to emerging technologies, international affairs, and governance, is instrumental in this endeavor.
The launch event, held at the Constitution Club in the national capital, saw the participation of several prominent lawmakers, including Members of Parliament Sujeet Kumar, Shashank Mani, Rabindra Narayan Behera, and Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu.
Rajya Sabha BJP MP Sujeet Kumar emphasized the need for a ‘humanistic AI’ that is accessible and beneficial to all. He articulated a vision where the AI market is decentralized, ensuring that AI tools and opportunities are widely available rather than concentrated, preventing domination by a few entities. This perspective underscores the Forum’s commitment to equitable AI development and deployment.
Sagar, Director and co-founder of Future Shift Labs, highlighted the Forum’s crucial role in bridging the existing gap between India’s fast-paced AI advancements and the legislative readiness to govern them. As AI increasingly influences public service delivery, economic growth, and democratic processes, the AILF seeks to ensure that policy keeps pace with technological evolution.

To achieve its objectives, the initiative plans to engage approximately 30 legislators annually through a structured program. This will include curated workshops, fellowships, and regular dialogues with leading experts in the field. Such engagements are expected to enable lawmakers to make informed policy decisions concerning the ethical, developmental, and governance dimensions of artificial intelligence.
