TLDR: Netflix has made its first official foray into generative AI for content creation, utilizing the technology for visual effects in its upcoming Argentine sci-fi series, ‘El Eternauta’. This move, announced by co-CEO Ted Sarandos, significantly accelerated VFX production and reduced costs, marking a new era for AI integration in the entertainment industry.
Netflix has officially embraced generative artificial intelligence (AI) in its production pipeline, marking a significant milestone with its upcoming Argentine sci-fi series, ‘El Eternauta’. This groundbreaking integration saw AI tools deployed to create complex visual effects, most notably a dramatic building collapse in Buenos Aires.
According to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, who announced the development during the company’s second-quarter financial results discussion, the use of AI-powered tools dramatically improved efficiency. Sarandos stated that the visual effects sequence for the building collapse was completed ’10 times faster than it could have been completed with traditional VFX tools and workflows.’ He further emphasized the cost-effectiveness, noting that ‘without AI, the cost of those effects would have made the production unaffordable for a show with a modest budget.’
‘El Eternauta,’ which tells the story of survivors navigating a deadly, toxic snowfall, represents Netflix’s official entry into AI-powered storytelling. Sarandos highlighted that this sequence is the ‘first GenAI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix original series or film.’ He views AI not as a replacement for human creativity but as an ‘incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better, not just cheaper.’
The adoption of AI in Hollywood has been a contentious topic, particularly following the labor unrest of 2023, where AI’s potential impact on jobs and creative rights was a central concern. However, Sarandos maintains that this application is about ‘real people doing real work with better tools.’ He believes these tools are already benefiting creators in areas like pre-visualization, shot planning, and visual effects, ultimately helping to ‘expand the possibilities of storytelling on screen.’
