Netflix Leverages Generative AI for Enhanced Production Quality and Cost Efficiency

TLDR: Netflix is integrating generative AI into its production pipeline, aiming to elevate creative output and optimize costs. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos emphasizes using AI to make films and TV ‘better’ rather than just ‘cheaper,’ citing its ability to democratize advanced visual effects for a wider range of projects.

Netflix is making significant strides in adopting generative artificial intelligence within its production processes, marking a strategic shift to both enhance creative capabilities and achieve greater cost efficiencies. This move, highlighted by Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, signals a new era for content creation at the streaming giant.

Sarandos articulated Netflix’s philosophy on AI during a recent earnings call, stating a clear preference for leveraging AI to make movies and TV ‘10% better’ rather than simply ‘50% cheaper.’ This perspective underscores a commitment to quality and innovation, suggesting that AI’s primary role is to empower creators and expand artistic possibilities.

One key application of generative AI is in advanced visual effects (VFX), such as de-aging technology. Traditionally, such sophisticated effects were exclusive to large-budget productions. However, Sarandos noted that AI-powered tools are now enabling smaller budget projects to access high-end VFX. He cited the 2019 Scorsese film ‘The Irishman,’ which utilized ‘very expensive’ technologies for de-aging. In contrast, five years later, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto directed ‘Pedro Páramo,’ a sprawling epic based on the classic Juan Rulfo book, which required showing characters across several decades. Generative AI facilitated the necessary de-aging VFX for a fraction of the cost incurred on ‘The Irishman,’ with Sarandos remarking that ‘the entire budget of the film was about the VFX cost on The Irishman.’ This demonstrates AI’s potential to make previously ‘unfilmable’ or cost-prohibitive creative visions a reality.

Netflix’s approach aims to enable creative talents to pursue ambitious ideas that were previously out of reach without AI assistance. This strategy positions Netflix to deliver more and higher-quality content to its viewers, while maintaining the human element of creative work. While some critics foresee a market flooded with cheap, low-quality AI-generated content, Netflix appears to be firmly focused on utilizing AI to produce premium, AI-enhanced content, signaling a nuanced and strategic integration of this transformative technology into the entertainment industry.
