The council’s Digital and Adult Services teams were jointly named winners of the ‘Best Innovation or Demand Management Initiative’ at the 2025 Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) Awards, held recently in Glasgow. This accolade celebrates the project’s success in leveraging AI to streamline operations and enhance the quality of care provided to residents.
The core of the project involves the introduction of AI tools designed to manage routine documentation and case recording. This strategic implementation has led to a remarkable reduction in the administrative burden on social workers, freeing up more than 15 hours of their time each week. Specifically, the time spent on writing up case notes has been cut by an average of 7.5 hours weekly, while submitting case assessments is now approximately 8 hours faster.
Council leaders emphasize that these changes enable staff to shift their focus from paperwork to building stronger relationships with residents and delivering more comprehensive, higher-quality assessments. Councillor Jo Hale, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services & Health, commented on the achievement, stating, “By harnessing AI, we’re not just improving efficiency — we’re enhancing the quality of care and freeing up our staff to focus on supporting residents.” Her statement underscores the dual benefit of the project: operational efficiency and improved human-centric care.
