TLDR: The travel marketing landscape is undergoing a significant transformation due to the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence in search. Experts emphasize that while the exact future of the travel purchase path remains uncertain, constant experimentation, data-driven marketing, and adapting to new AI-powered search experiences like Google’s AI Overviews are crucial for travel brands to maintain visibility and engage travelers.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is profoundly reshaping the travel industry, particularly in marketing and search engine optimization (SEO). As part of Phocuswright’s ‘The New Age(nts) Trend Series,’ a panel of industry experts convened to discuss the implications of AI on online visibility and traveler engagement. The central theme revolved around the ‘elephant in the room’: the evolving nature of search, historically the starting point for most travel journeys.
Mike Coletta, Senior Manager of Research and Innovation for Phocuswright, highlighted the immediate impact of Google’s AI Overviews, which are already altering the search results page. The consensus among panelists is that further changes are inevitable. John Lyotier, Co-founder and CEO of TravelAI, stated, ‘I think the biggest thing that you can know is that it’s going to change even further—the one thing that is certain is change.’
Brennen Bliss, CEO of Propellic, echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the uncertainty of the future purchase path. ‘The best answer I can give you is nobody really knows right now what the purchase path will look like in a year,’ Bliss remarked. He anticipates a transition in the primary service used for travel research, planning, and booking, currently dominated by Google’s search experience. The key question, according to Bliss, is whether this transition will remain with Google or shift to another chatbot, ‘to be determined by the market.’
For travel marketers, the advice is to focus on what works best to stand out. Lyotier emphasized the mathematical aspect of marketing: ‘Marketing is math. Find the channels that work for you, whatever it happens to be—paid, organic, new methods—constant experimentation is the key.’ He believes that measurable marketing will continue to succeed. Lyotier also pointed out the broader industry growth, stating, ‘If you look at the big picture and go back up many, many layers, travel as an industry is growing 8% year over year. If travel is growing 8% year over year, there are more consumers who are traveling. As travel becomes more efficient, there’s more dollars left to travel more efficiently. If you market travel more efficiently, more people will travel.’

The discussion also touched upon critical areas such as personalization, the creation of AI-generated advertisements, agent-to-agent communication, and the importance of digital identity in the evolving landscape. The rise of ‘agentic AI’ and Instagram’s integration with Google are further indicators of the ongoing shifts that marketers must navigate.
