TLDR: Naver is asserting its unique position as a true full-stack artificial intelligence (AI) company, leveraging its comprehensive capabilities to bolster South Korea’s AI ecosystem and drive global expansion. CEO Choi Soo-yeon emphasized Naver Cloud’s strengths in data center operations, independent large language model (LLM) development, service utilization, and GPU management. The company is actively pursuing ‘Sovereign AI’ initiatives, tailoring AI systems to local cultural and legal frameworks, and has secured significant projects both domestically and internationally, including digital twin platforms in Saudi Arabia.
Naver, a leading South Korean tech giant, is solidifying its standing as a formidable player in the global artificial intelligence landscape, distinguished by its end-to-end AI capabilities. CEO Choi Soo-yeon recently affirmed the company’s commitment to fostering Korea’s AI ecosystem, underpinned by Naver Cloud’s robust full-stack AI infrastructure. This encompasses expertise in data center construction and operation, the development of proprietary large language models (LLMs), efficient service utilization, and advanced graphics processing unit (GPU) operations.
During a recent conference call to announce Naver’s second-quarter earnings, Choi highlighted the immense opportunities presented by ‘Sovereign AI.’ This strategic focus involves creating localized AI systems that respect unique cultural values and legal frameworks, addressing specific national demands. Naver views long-term investment in AI technology as a foundational element for generating new opportunities in the medium to long term. Evidence of this strategy’s success includes GPU leasing projects supporting the ‘World Best LLM Challenge’ in July and being selected as a contractor for building a national representative LLM.
Naver is also making significant strides in its global Sovereign AI business. In June, the company successfully completed the construction of digital twin platforms across three cities in Saudi Arabia, an experience it aims to leverage for further expansion into other Middle Eastern cities. Choi emphasized Naver’s intent to meet the AI sovereignty demands of foreign governments and institutions by applying its domestically accumulated technology and service operation experience, leveraging the stability and reliability that only Naver can provide to expand its global market presence.
Financially, Naver reported strong second-quarter results, with revenues reaching 2.9151 trillion won and operating profit at 521.6 billion won, alongside a net profit of 497.4 billion won. These figures represent an 11.7% increase in revenues and a 10.3% rise in operating profit compared to the same period last year, underscoring the company’s robust performance as it continues to invest heavily in AI.
Beyond its full-stack capabilities, Naver’s AI strategy integrates AI across its core platforms, including search, e-commerce, and content delivery, enhancing functionality and personalization. The company’s HyperCLOVA X AI platform is central to this integration, with plans to base main services like internet search and online shopping on it starting in the first half of next year. Naver is also developing an AI-powered shopping app, Naver Plus Store, for hyper-personalized recommendations and an ‘AI Briefing’ function for summarized, AI-generated answers to user queries.
