Nationwide Building Society, the world’s largest building society serving over 17 million customers in the UK, has announced a significant collaboration with technology giants Microsoft and Accenture to bolster its cybersecurity defenses through the integration of generative AI. This strategic partnership aims to mitigate escalating cyber threats, consolidate technology tools, and achieve substantial operational cost efficiencies.
The collaboration centers on the co-investment and development of advanced generative AI-driven cyber solutions. A key initial success of this partnership is Nationwide’s large-scale migration to Microsoft Sentinel, a cloud-native security information and event management (SIEM) platform. This migration has enabled Nationwide to establish a streamlined and unified security infrastructure, significantly accelerating cyber threat detection capabilities.
David Boda, Chief Security and Resilience Officer at Nationwide, emphasized the value of this initiative, stating, “Accenture’s support in our migration to Microsoft Sentinel has been invaluable to set us up for success. The use of generative AI to enable the migration allowed us to deliver the change more efficiently, in turn freeing up capacity for wider improvement activities.” The generative AI security information and event management capability, co-developed by Accenture and Microsoft, played a crucial role in accelerating the migration of hundreds of terabytes of data for Nationwide.
The expanded collaboration between Accenture and Microsoft focuses on four critical areas of cybersecurity transformation: Security Operation Center (SOC) modernization, automated data and AI security, security-centric cyber migration and consolidation, and enhanced identity and access management (IAM). According to Accenture’s ‘State of Cyber Resilience 2025’ report, a staggering 90% of organizations are currently unprepared to defend against AI-augmented cyber threats, underscoring the urgency and relevance of these solutions.

Security-centric migration and consolidation solutions, utilizing Microsoft’s security suite, are anticipated to achieve between 35% to 50% cost savings. Furthermore, enhanced identity and access management solutions, powered by Microsoft Entra Suite, are projected to deliver 30% to 50% cost efficiencies by optimizing identity governance and reducing infrastructure costs.
