Mistral AI Seeks $1 Billion Funding and European AI Data Center Development with MGX and Nvidia

TLDR: French generative AI startup Mistral AI is in advanced discussions to secure up to $1 billion in new equity funding, primarily from Abu Dhabi’s MGX fund, and hundreds of millions in debt financing from French lenders like Bpifrance. This significant capital injection will fuel a joint venture with MGX and Nvidia to establish a large-scale AI data center in Europe, aimed at bolstering European AI sovereignty and supporting Mistral’s expansion into a comprehensive AI cloud player.

French generative AI startup Mistral AI is reportedly in advanced negotiations to raise a substantial new funding round, targeting up to $1 billion in equity financing. A significant portion of this investment is expected to come from Abu Dhabi’s MGX fund, a major technology investor that has previously backed prominent AI companies like OpenAI and xAI. In addition to equity, Mistral AI is also seeking hundreds of millions of euros in debt financing from French financial institutions, including the state investor Bpifrance, which is already a shareholder in the company.

This ambitious funding initiative is closely tied to a strategic joint project involving Mistral AI, MGX, and Nvidia. The collaboration aims to construct Europe’s largest AI data center campus, a move that underscores a broader push for digital autonomy and AI sovereignty within the continent. This new infrastructure, planned to be entirely located in France, will serve as the technical backbone for Mistral Compute, a new AI cloud platform. The data center is projected to house 18,000 of Nvidia’s latest Grace Blackwell chips, with an initial capacity of 40 megawatts, potentially expanding to 100 megawatts.

Founded in 2023 by former researchers from Google DeepMind and Meta, Mistral AI has rapidly emerged as a leading force in Europe’s AI sector, known for its open-weight large language models (LLMs) and products like the Le Chat chatbot. The company has already raised over $1.1 billion in under two years, reaching a post-money valuation of approximately $6.51 billion following its Series B round in June 2024. Its existing investors include Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, Nvidia, Salesforce, and Microsoft.

Mistral AI CEO Arthur Mensch has expressed the company’s intent to evolve beyond its image as solely a model builder, aiming to become a fully-fledged AI cloud player. This strategic shift, supported by the new funding and infrastructure, is expected to offer greater scalability and strategic control over AI deployment within Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized the critical importance of the collaboration between Mistral, MGX, and Nvidia for France’s technological future, calling it a ‘decisive moment’ for the French AI industry and a cornerstone of his vision for AI sovereignty.

The UAE’s potential investment aligns with its broader strategy to diversify its economy beyond oil dependency, with a target for AI to contribute 20% of its non-oil GDP by 2031. This significant investment in European AI infrastructure also reflects a growing trend of substantial EU-Gulf AI spending, with France and the UAE alone committing €30-50 billion to AI data center investments, and President Macron highlighting €109 billion in AI-related investments across Europe. This unprecedented infrastructure development is seen as crucial for enabling European firms to access the computing resources necessary to compete globally in the AI landscape.
