In addition to equity, Mistral AI is also seeking hundreds of millions of euros in debt financing from French financial institutions, including the state investor Bpifrance, which is already a shareholder in the company.
This ambitious funding initiative is closely tied to a strategic joint project involving Mistral AI, MGX, and Nvidia. The collaboration aims to construct Europe’s largest AI data center campus, a move that underscores a broader push for digital autonomy and AI sovereignty within the continent. This new infrastructure, planned to be entirely located in France, will serve as the technical backbone for Mistral Compute, a new AI cloud platform. The data center is projected to house 18,000 of Nvidia’s latest Grace Blackwell chips, with an initial capacity of 40 megawatts, potentially expanding to 100 megawatts.
Founded in 2023 by former researchers from Google DeepMind and Meta, Mistral AI has rapidly emerged as a leading force in Europe’s AI sector, known for its open-weight large language models (LLMs) and products like the Le Chat chatbot. The company has already raised over $1.1 billion in under two years, reaching a post-money valuation of approximately $6.51 billion following its Series B round in June 2024.
