JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – A significant boost for Africa’s technological landscape was announced today as the Milken Institute and the Motsepe Foundation unveiled the recipients of the Milken-Motsepe Prize in AI and Manufacturing. Ten groundbreaking companies, all focused on revolutionizing next-generation manufacturing solutions across Africa, are set to receive a total of $2 million in awards. Each of these selected semifinalist teams will immediately be granted $50,000 in unrestricted funding to further their innovative work.
The prize is strategically designed to identify and support enterprises that are harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies to stimulate inclusive economic growth and sustainable development throughout the African continent. This initiative comes at a crucial time, with projections indicating that AI could contribute nearly $3 trillion to Africa’s economy by 2033, positioning this endeavor to foster substantial innovation.
The ten semifinalists are slated to present their transformative innovations at the prestigious Milken Institute Middle East and Africa Summit, scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on December 4–5, 2025. These companies were chosen based on their scalable solutions, demonstrated track records, and a strong commitment to job creation and workforce development.
Dr. Emily Musil, managing director at the Milken Institute, emphasized the broader impact of the award, stating, “By focusing on AI and manufacturing, this award identifies and supports visionary teams transforming industry with advanced technologies, which has a multiplying effect by creating economic opportunity for communities across Africa.” Beyond financial capital, the prize offers an invaluable global platform for increased visibility, mentorship opportunities, and crucial connections with investors.
The selected innovators represent a diverse array of sectors, showcasing the wide applicability of AI. For example, BleagLee, a company based in Cameroon, is utilizing AI to convert plastic, agricultural, and electronic waste into high-value recycled materials. In South Africa, DataProphet is providing industrial intelligence solutions that empower manufacturers to optimize their production processes more efficiently.
