A key development in this new phase is the appointment of Stephane Marceau to the role of Managing Director of AI Ventures at Mila. The timing of this initiative is crucial, as venture capital funding for academic spinouts has seen a significant surge, now accounting for 15% of all U.S. venture capital activity. In a clear demonstration of this trend, U.S. AI startups attracted a record $97 billion in venture capital in 2024, which is nearly half of all startup investment. This highlights the role of AI startups as a primary driver of innovation in the current economy.
