A groundbreaking study conducted by Middlebury College economists Germán Reyes and Zara Contractor has revealed a significant shift in student learning practices, with over 80% of Middlebury students now utilizing generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools for their academic work. This rapid adoption, observed in less than two years since the public launch of ChatGPT, far surpasses the 40% AI adoption rate among U.S. adults, marking one of the fastest technology integration rates on record.
The survey, conducted between December 2024 and February 2025, encompassed 634 students, representing over 20% of Middlebury College’s student body. The findings challenge prevailing ‘panic-driven narratives’ surrounding AI in higher education, which often suggest widespread academic dishonesty. Instead, the research indicates that students predominantly leverage AI to enhance their learning processes rather than to circumvent assignments.
When questioned about various academic applications of AI, ‘explaining concepts’ emerged as the top use case. Students frequently described AI as an ‘on-demand tutor,’ a valuable resource particularly when traditional office hours were unavailable or when immediate assistance was required late at night. Other common uses included summarizing readings, proofreading, creating programming code, and, to a lesser extent, writing essays.
The study further delineated AI usage into two categories: augmentation and automation. It found that 61% of AI-using students employ these tools for augmentation purposes, such as improving understanding or refining work. Conversely, 42% utilize AI for automation tasks, like generating code or drafting essays. However, even in automation, students demonstrated discernment, often reserving these tools for ‘crunch periods’ like exam week or for low-stakes tasks such as formatting bibliographies and drafting routine emails, rather than as a default approach for core coursework.
While the survey focused on Middlebury College, a small liberal arts institution, the researchers noted that their findings align with similar studies conducted across over 130 universities in more than 50 countries. This broader analysis suggests a global trend where students who engage with AI are more likely to use it to augment their learning rather than to automate it entirely.
