Microsoft Research Illuminates Generative AI’s Impact on Knowledge Professions Amidst Major Workforce Restructuring

The study, which surveyed 319 knowledge workers and gathered 936 first-hand examples of GenAI use in professional tasks, indicates a significant shift in the nature of work.

According to the findings, GenAI tools are perceived to reduce the cognitive effort required for critical thinking tasks among knowledge workers. This effect is particularly pronounced when workers possess high confidence in the AI’s capabilities. However, the research also highlights a nuanced dynamic: workers who are confident in their own skills tend to perceive greater effort when it comes to evaluating and applying the responses generated by AI. This suggests a broader shift in cognitive effort, moving from direct task execution to a more supervisory role, where human workers are increasingly responsible for oversight and validation of AI-generated content.

The study further elaborates on specific areas, noting that for tasks like knowledge retrieval, AI automates information gathering, but places a new onus on workers to verify the accuracy of AI outputs. Similarly, while AI simplifies content creation—assisting with generation, idea formulation, and stylistic editing—human input remains crucial for aligning outputs with specific needs and quality standards. While the study primarily focuses on knowledge-based roles, the broader implication is that professions requiring physical labor remain largely unaffected by these particular AI advancements.

This research comes at a time when Microsoft is undergoing a significant transformation driven by its aggressive pursuit of AI leadership. In July 2025, the tech giant announced a workforce reduction of approximately 9,100 jobs, representing about 4% of its global workforce. These cuts follow earlier rounds of layoffs in January, May, and June of the same year, bringing the total job reductions to over 7% of its global workforce for the year. Industry observers widely interpret these layoffs as a strategic reallocation of resources, shifting expenditures from human labor to massive investments in AI development.
