TLDR: Microsoft is integrating Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4.1 AI models into its 365 Copilot, providing users with alternatives to OpenAI’s technology. This strategic move aims to diversify Microsoft’s AI partnerships and enhance Copilot’s capabilities for business users, while still maintaining OpenAI’s models as the primary power source.
Redmond, Washington – September 25, 2025 – Microsoft today announced a significant expansion of its artificial intelligence offerings within Microsoft 365 Copilot, integrating advanced AI models from Anthropic, including Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4.1. This move signals a strategic shift for the software giant, aiming to diversify its AI partnerships and reduce its reliance on its high-profile collaboration with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.
Starting Wednesday, users who opt in will be able to switch between OpenAI and Anthropic models within Copilot’s AI-powered reasoning agent, ‘Researcher,’ and when developing agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio. Charles Lamanna, president of Microsoft’s business and industry Copilot operations, stated that this integration will ‘bring even more powerful experiences to Microsoft 365 Copilot.’
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized the company’s ‘multi-model approach,’ explaining, ‘It’s all about bringing the best AI from across the industry to Copilot, tuned for work and tailored to every business.’ While Copilot will continue to be powered by OpenAI’s latest models, the addition of Anthropic’s Claude provides commercial Frontier Copilot users with their first alternative, offering greater flexibility and choice.
This initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to broaden its AI ecosystem. The company has already integrated other AI models, such as China’s DeepSeek into its Azure cloud platform, and earlier this year announced plans to host new AI models from companies like Elon Musk’s xAI and Meta Platforms in its own data centers. Microsoft’s AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has openly stated that the company does not feel it needs to be an AI leader, but rather aims to build applications based on ‘the best available technology from various providers.’

The integration of Anthropic’s models is particularly noteworthy as Anthropic’s AI models are primarily hosted on Amazon Web Services, a direct competitor to Microsoft’s Azure cloud business. This collaboration underscores Microsoft’s commitment to an open approach to AI agents and a less exclusive alliance in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
