This endorsement positions Microsoft alongside more than 50 other prominent industry businesses, such as Salesforce, Oracle, and SAP, all rallying behind Google’s initiative to standardize communication between AI agents.
The A2A protocol, an open standard introduced by Google in early April, is designed to enable AI agents – autonomous software programs capable of detecting information, making decisions, and executing actions to achieve specific goals – to communicate and collaborate seamlessly across various applications, cloud environments, and services. The core objective is to break down silos, allowing agents to exchange objectives and invoke actions, thereby fostering a more integrated and efficient AI ecosystem.
Microsoft’s support extends to integrating A2A into two of its key AI development platforms: Azure AI Foundry and Copilot Studio. This integration will empower agents developed within these Microsoft environments to interact effectively with external agents, including those created using different tools or hosted outside the Microsoft ecosystem. For instance, a Microsoft-developed agent could handle the scheduling of a meeting, while a Google agent simultaneously drafts and dispatches the email invitations, showcasing the potential for sophisticated, multi-agent workflows.
