TLDR: A new report from McKinsey & Company warns that global banks could lose up to $170 billion in profits if they fail to adapt to the growing consumer adoption of agentic AI and autonomous financial bots. This shift threatens traditional revenue streams, particularly from low-interest deposits, as AI agents empower consumers to optimize their finances. While AI offers operational efficiencies, early adopters are poised to gain a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving financial landscape.
Global financial institutions are on the brink of a significant profit reduction, potentially losing $170 billion, as consumers increasingly leverage agentic artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous financial bots. This stark warning comes from McKinsey’s Global Banking Annual Review 2025, which highlights the urgent need for banks to adapt to this technological shift or face a structural decline in profitability.
The core of the challenge lies in the erosion of banks’ traditional profit pools, especially those derived from low or zero-interest deposits. As AI-driven assistants become more sophisticated, they enable consumers to actively optimize their savings and transfer funds to accounts offering better returns, thereby eliminating the customer inertia that banks have historically relied upon.
Pradip Patiath, a senior partner at McKinsey, emphasized the impact of this automation, stating, ‘Imagine an AI agent saying, ‘You could save $2,000 a year by moving your money.” McKinsey estimates that approximately $23 trillion of the global $70 trillion in consumer banking assets currently reside in near-zero-interest accounts. Should the adoption of AI agents by consumers continue its upward trajectory, the banking sector could experience an industry-wide profit decline of 9%, pushing returns below the cost of capital.
Despite the significant disruption, AI integration is also projected to bring substantial operational cost reductions, estimated at 15–20% initially. However, McKinsey cautions that these savings are likely to be neutralized over time due to increased competition, with the benefits primarily flowing to customers through improved rates and personalized services.

Banks that proactively deploy agentic AI tools stand to gain a temporary first-mover advantage. This includes enhancing customer experience, optimizing deposit flows, and mitigating long-term revenue leakage. The report underscores that the AI revolution presents both a formidable disruption and a considerable opportunity. Financial institutions that successfully ‘rewire’ their business models around intelligent automation are expected to emerge leaner and more customer-centric, while those that lag risk a significant and lasting impact on their profitability.
