Manulife Wealth & Asset Management Deploys AI Platform to Revolutionize Investment Research

TLDR: Manulife Wealth & Asset Management has launched a new AI platform, the ‘AI Research Assistant,’ to bolster its public markets investment research teams. This innovative tool aims to streamline workflows, extract critical insights from extensive data, and significantly reduce the time spent on document review, enhancing investment decision-making.

Manulife Wealth & Asset Management has announced the introduction of a sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) platform, dubbed the ‘AI Research Assistant,’ designed to empower its public markets investment research teams. This strategic move marks a significant advancement in the firm’s adoption of technology to fortify its investment decision-making processes.

The AI Research Assistant seamlessly integrates into the daily research operations, enabling analysts to swiftly glean actionable insights from vast and intricate datasets. The platform’s capabilities include consolidating a wide array of information sources such as financial reports, earnings transcripts, sell-side commentary, internal notes, and news stories into concise, actionable summaries.

According to company statements, the platform is projected to reduce the time required for document review by an impressive 70% to 80%. Paul Lorentz, President and CEO of Manulife Wealth & Asset Management, emphasized the transformative potential of AI in the industry. ‘Artificial intelligence is ushering in a new era for investment management. One defined by accelerated insight, enhanced precision, and scalable decision-making,’ Lorentz stated. He added, ‘Its ability to distill vast and complex data into actionable intelligence is reshaping how we assess risk, uncover opportunity, and construct portfolios.’

Lorentz further clarified that AI is intended to complement, rather than replace, human judgment, with accountability firmly remaining with investment professionals. Colin Purdie, Global Chief Investment Officer for Public Markets at Manulife Investment Management, highlighted the immediate benefits of the new tool. ‘This is a really exciting development that we believe is an advancement and competitive edge for investment research,’ Purdie commented. ‘By integrating this tool into our processes, we’re accelerating insight generation and empowering our investment professionals to focus on high-impact, strategic investment decisions.’

The AI Research Assistant was developed through a collaborative effort involving Manulife’s technology, AI, and investment research teams. Specialists were embedded with analysts to ensure the platform aligned perfectly with existing workflows and maintained the rigorous depth of analysis expected in active management. As of August 31, a substantial 65% of public markets research team members had already incorporated the tool into their work.

Robi Krempus, Head of AI at Manulife Wealth & Asset Management, articulated the development philosophy: ‘We set out to build a solution that supports our investment teams by simplifying workflows and unlocking the potential of AI for faster and deeper insights.’
