TLDR: The Maldives has launched its first-ever homegrown Bachelor of Science degree program in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, spearheaded by Mianz College. This initiative marks a significant step in the nation’s commitment to developing local AI expertise and fostering a technology-driven future, aiming to transform Maldivians from AI users into AI creators.
In a landmark move for its technological future, the Maldives officially unveiled its first homegrown Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree program in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning on August 21, 2025. This pioneering initiative, launched by Mianz College, signifies the nation’s strategic commitment to cultivating a skilled local workforce in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
The new three-year BSc program is designed to equip Maldivian students with the essential skills required to develop, manage, and innovate AI technologies. It integrates core computer science fundamentals with specialized AI subjects and culminates in a comprehensive 30-credit capstone project, providing practical experience in AI application. Dr. Fathimath Shaheema, Vice Rector of Mianz College, emphasized the long-term vision behind this program, stating, ‘We have been working on introducing this program for the past two years. The goal is to transform Maldivians from AI users, to AI creators. As Mohamed Thakurufaanu famously said, people become what we make of them.’
The program adopts a hybrid learning model, combining traditional classroom instruction with e-learning components. This flexible approach aims to enhance accessibility for students across the archipelago, extending educational opportunities beyond the capital, Malé City. By fostering a pipeline of skilled AI professionals, the initiative is expected to significantly bolster the Maldivian tech sector, enabling graduates to implement AI-driven solutions across diverse industries and reduce the nation’s reliance on foreign expertise.

This educational milestone aligns with the Maldives’ broader national strategy to embrace advanced technology. The nation recently became the first in South Asia to release a national report evaluating its readiness for AI adoption, a UNESCO-backed study assessing its preparedness for ethical, inclusive, and sustainable AI integration. Furthermore, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has consistently highlighted the government’s commitment to leveraging technology and AI to enhance productivity, promote paperless e-government platforms, and integrate AI into various public services, underscoring a comprehensive national push towards a digitally empowered future.
