Major Tech Firms Restructure Workforce Amidst AI Transformation, Leading to Thousands of Job Cuts

TLDR: Leading global IT companies, including TCS and Accenture, are undergoing significant workforce reductions, with thousands of jobs being cut as artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes the industry. This transformation is driven by the adoption of AI tools for automation, efficiency, and cost optimization. While some roles are being eliminated due to AI’s capabilities, companies are simultaneously investing in AI-specific skills and reskilling initiatives, highlighting a strategic shift towards an AI-centric operational model.

The global technology sector is currently experiencing a profound transformation, with major IT giants like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Accenture at the forefront of significant workforce restructuring. This shift is largely attributed to the accelerating integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and generative AI (GenAI) into business operations, leading to thousands of job cuts worldwide.

According to reports from September 2025, the global workforce industry is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by AI. Companies are adopting AI tools to automate business operations, improve efficiency, and cut costs. This progress, however, comes at the cost of human jobs. Layoffs.fyi indicates that as of September 2025, 204 tech companies globally have laid off 89,964 employees.

Accenture, a prominent consulting firm, has reportedly eliminated around 11,000 positions in the last three months, with more job cuts anticipated as it pursues AI-driven restructuring and cost-optimization plans. The company’s CEO, Julie Sweet, stated during an earnings call that Accenture is “exiting on a compressed timeline people where reskilling, based on our experience, is not a viable path for the skills we need.” Despite these reductions, Accenture expects its overall headcount to increase in the coming fiscal year, as it aggressively hires in high-demand areas. The firm has nearly doubled its AI and data specialists to 77,000 since fiscal 2023 and has trained over 550,000 employees in generative AI fundamentals. Sweet described advanced AI as “expansionary” rather than “deflationary” for the business, indicating a strategic pivot towards AI-driven client demands. The restructuring program, primarily focused on severance costs, is projected to save the company over $1 billion.

Similarly, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) confirmed plans to let go of approximately 12,000 employees, representing about 2% of its workforce. However, some reports suggest the actual number of layoffs by the Indian IT giant could be closer to 30,000. While TCS did not explicitly cite AI as the sole reason for these cuts, the company has been actively integrating AI into its operations, establishing a dedicated AI and Services Transformation unit to place AI at the core of its growth strategy. The company’s restructuring is driven by a changing economic and technological landscape.

This trend is not isolated to TCS and Accenture; other tech giants like Microsoft, Intel, Meta, and Amazon are also undergoing similar workforce adjustments. The industry-wide movement reflects a strategic imperative to upskill employees and embrace AI technologies, leading to the phasing out of roles that cannot be transitioned into this new era. Startup CA founder Meenal Goel emphasized this reality, stating on LinkedIn, “You are just an Employee ID, and AI does not care about that.” She highlighted that “the more replaceable your work is, the more vulnerable you are. The way forward is to adapt and build skills that AI cannot easily replicate, like creativity, strategy, and human judgment. In this new economy, relevance is the only real job security.”

The rapid adoption of AI and GenAI tools is automating several tasks, replacing human talent, and prompting billions of dollars in R&D investments by technology companies. While AI offers significant opportunities for efficiency and innovation, it also presents challenges, including the need for extensive workforce reskilling and addressing the economic and social implications of AI-induced layoffs. The focus is now on cultivating human-centered skills that AI cannot easily replicate to ensure job security in this evolving landscape.
