Macquarie Embraces AI Agents for Enhanced Productivity Across Finance and HR

TLDR: Macquarie Banking and Financial Services (BFS) is actively integrating agentic AI into its operations, with several proofs-of-concept underway to boost productivity and streamline administrative tasks. The financial giant is also investing in AI startups like Sapia.ai, which uses AI-powered tools for inclusive recruitment in HR. Macquarie is preparing its workforce for a future where human-AI collaboration is central, emphasizing ‘agent-ready’ outputs and prompt engineering training.

Macquarie Banking and Financial Services (BFS) is at the forefront of adopting artificial intelligence, actively preparing its workforce for a future where AI agents will play a significant role in various workflows and processes. Shaun Kamler, Head of Control Tower within BFS, revealed at a recent Agentforce Financial Services Summit that the organization has ‘five or six’ active proofs-of-concept (POCs) utilizing agentic AI technology. The primary goal is to unlock a new level of productivity by automating administrative tasks, thereby freeing up employees for more high-value activities. Kamler anticipates that ‘teams of agents’ will be pervasive throughout the organization in ways yet to be fully discovered.

Beyond internal operational enhancements, Macquarie is also strategically investing in AI innovation. Macquarie Capital’s Venture Capital (MCVC) business recently led a A$17 million Series A funding round for Sapia.ai, an Australian-based startup. Sapia.ai has developed an AI-powered technology platform designed to enhance the equitability, efficiency, and effectiveness of the hiring process. Its ‘AI Smart Interviewer’ tool offers data-driven candidate assessments aimed at making faster, smarter, and unbiased hiring decisions, particularly in the HR sector. The platform has already been used to interview over 2 million people in 30 countries and has demonstrated success in promoting diversity, with one client reporting a threefold increase in ethnic minority hires and a 1.5-fold increase in women hires.

Macquarie’s approach to AI integration is two-pronged: incorporating AI as an add-on to existing systems and applying it on an enterprise-wide basis. Enterprise search is one such organization-wide AI capability being pursued to expedite access to structured and unstructured data.

Recognizing the transformative impact of AI, Macquarie BFS is proactively training its staff. This includes prompt engineering training to equip employees with the skills needed to interact effectively with AI agents. Kamler stressed the importance of producing ‘agent-ready’ outputs, as poorly structured information can lead to ‘hallucination’ in AI interpretations.

The company is also leveraging its ‘digital headquarters’ in Slack for experimentation with AI agents. One such agent assists product designers and software engineers in ensuring code compliance with Macquarie’s cybersecurity policies. While the focus has primarily been on employee-facing use cases, the potential for AI to improve customer experiences is also being explored. Macquarie’s strategy involves collaborating with a select number of technology partners to co-create solutions, rather than broadly engaging with many.
