TLDR: Lucknow University has introduced a series of new credit courses and academic enhancements for its commerce and business administration students. These updates include making French a compulsory foreign language for M.Com students, adding specialized electives like Cosmetic Accounting and Forensic Accounting for MBA in Finance, and incorporating skill-based modules for career readiness. Additionally, the Department of Commerce has integrated an ‘AI in Business’ course into its postgraduate curriculum, aiming to equip students with practical AI applications across various commerce domains.
Lucknow University (LU) has rolled out significant academic updates and new credit courses for its commerce and business administration students, designed to boost employability and practical learning in a rapidly evolving global and technological landscape. These initiatives underscore the university’s commitment to bridging the gap between academic knowledge and professional requirements.
For students enrolled in the M.Com 1-year program, the University Grants Commission (UGC) foreign language course in French has been made compulsory in the first semester. This move aims to foster global communication skills and open up international career opportunities, particularly in fields such as international business, finance, and trade, where multilingual proficiency offers a distinct competitive advantage.
Students pursuing an MBA in Finance and Accounts will benefit from newly introduced elective groups. These specialized areas include Cosmetic Accounting, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Forensic Accounting and Auditing. These courses are meticulously crafted to provide learners with up-to-date knowledge aligned with current industry practices, enabling them to navigate complex financial scenarios, evaluate corporate deals, and identify financial irregularities—skills highly sought after in today’s corporate environment.
Further enhancing career readiness, the Department of Commerce has also introduced several skill-based modules under the new credit system. These include ‘Interview and Resume Building’, ‘Personal Interview Techniques’, and ‘Group Discussion Training’. These modules are specifically designed to build students’ confidence, refine their presentation abilities, and thoroughly prepare them for placement drives and competitive recruitment processes.
Prof. Ram Milan, Head of the Department of Commerce, emphasized the strategic intent behind these changes, stating, “These courses have been designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and professional requirements. By integrating practical skill modules and industry-focused electives, we aim to make our students more confident, articulate, and job-ready to meet the dynamic demands of the corporate world.”
In a forward-thinking move, the Department of Commerce has also integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its postgraduate curriculum for both one-year and two-year programs. Recognizing the pervasive influence of AI across all industries, a new course titled ‘AI in Business’ has been introduced. This course is structured to provide students with both a foundational understanding and practical knowledge of AI applications within core commerce domains.
The ‘AI in Business’ course adopts an interdisciplinary approach, covering the use of AI in critical areas such such as accounting, auditing, finance, taxation, marketing, and human resource management. The curriculum begins with an introduction to AI, focusing on its basic concepts, automation, learning, and decision-making. It then delves into AI’s application in accounting and auditing, highlighting its role in data entry, journal entries, ledger postings, and financial analysis. In the finance and taxation modules, students will be introduced to AI-powered tools for financial planning and tax calculation, including income tax and GST software. The marketing section explores key technologies like machine learning and natural language processing, emphasizing their role in customer targeting and data-driven campaigns. Prof. Ram Milan also commented on this initiative, stating, “This course is our step towards future-proofing our students.”
