TLDR: LTIMindtree CEO Venugopal Lambu states that AI-assisted coding is becoming the preferred method for hiring new graduates, reflecting a broader industry trend where AI is decoupling revenue growth from headcount increases. The company plans to continue hiring freshers, focusing on foundational skills that can be augmented by AI tools.
LTIMindtree, India’s sixth-largest IT services company, is embracing AI-assisted coding as a pivotal strategy for hiring new graduates, according to its Chief Executive Officer, Venugopal Lambu. This approach signals a significant shift in industry practices, driven by the evolving relationship between revenue growth and workforce expansion in the age of artificial intelligence.
Lambu emphasized that the correlation between revenue and headcount growth is becoming increasingly “de-linear” or “non-linear.” This means that as AI technology permeates various functions and solutions, companies can achieve revenue growth without necessarily increasing their workforce proportionally. He noted, “Over the last few quarters, when we added revenue, the headcount has not necessarily increased. So, there is a correlation or a non-linearity, but it is too early to call out to what extent it will happen.”
Despite this evolving dynamic, LTIMindtree remains committed to inducting fresh talent. The company recently added 1,600 freshers in the last quarter and plans to hire more throughout the year. Lambu highlighted that the emphasis in hiring will be on the learning ability and foundational skill sets of graduates, upon which companies can build using their internal training and learning methodologies.

AI-assisted coding is set to become an integral part of the improvised assessment processes for entry-level graduates across various roles, including coding, cloud, infrastructure, and data. This move comes as AI is already impacting entry-level jobs, with some companies reportedly coding 20-25% via AI, thereby potentially reducing the immediate need for junior-level human coders. LTIMindtree’s strategy aims to equip new hires with the skills to leverage these advanced tools effectively, ensuring they are prepared for the future of work in the IT sector.
