AMSTERDAM – The Linux Foundation, a leading non-profit organization dedicated to fostering open-source innovation, officially announced on August 25, 2025, the integration of the ‘agentgateway’ project into its growing portfolio. Unveiled at the Open Source Summit Europe, this new open-source, AI-native proxy, originally developed by cloud-native application networking company Solo.io, is set to revolutionize connectivity, security, and observability in complex agentic AI environments.
Traditional gateways, designed before the widespread adoption of AI agents, often struggle to support modern AI protocols without extensive re-architecture. The agentgateway project directly addresses this challenge by offering the first and only data plane engineered from the ground up specifically for AI agents. It provides robust governance and security across critical interaction types: agent-to-agent, agent-to-tool, and agent-to-large language model (LLM) communications.
The project boasts support for leading protocols, including Agent2Agent (A2A), which was recently contributed to the Linux Foundation, and Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP). This broad compatibility is crucial for enabling seamless communication and interoperability within diverse AI ecosystems. The initiative has already garnered significant industry backing, with contributions and participation from prominent organizations such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Cisco, Huawei, IBM, Microsoft, Red Hat, Shell, and Zayo.
Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “The rise of AI agents depends on a strong foundation of open source infrastructure that is built to last.
