Tokyo-based AI SaaS innovator, LayerX, has announced a significant milestone, securing $100 million in Series B funding. The round was spearheaded by Technology Cross Ventures, marking their inaugural investment in the Japanese market and underscoring a growing global interest in AI-driven enterprise solutions. This latest capital injection elevates LayerX’s total funding to an impressive $192.2 million.

Founded in 2018 by serial entrepreneur Yoshinori Fukushima, who possesses a strong background in machine learning and digital transformation, LayerX emerged from a digitalization and blockchain initiative. The company has rapidly gained traction with its innovative AI platform, which is engineered to automate the often-cumbersome administrative tasks within enterprise back-offices. These include critical functions such as invoice processing, expense management, and compliance checks.

LayerX’s suite of offerings is designed to address the persistent challenges of back-office drudgery, promising to cut workloads by up to 50% for large enterprises. Their flagship products include ‘Bakuraku,’ a platform dedicated to automating corporate expense workflows; ‘Alterna,’ a digital investment platform; and ‘Ai Workforce,’ a generative AI solution aimed at optimizing various work processes. The company has already forged strategic partnerships with prominent Japanese corporations, notably Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG).

This investment comes at a crucial time for Japan, where aging demographics, labor shortages, and the 2023 implementation of e-invoicing are compelling companies to accelerate automation in finance, tax, procurement, and HR. Despite these drivers, digital transformation efforts in Japan have seen limited success, with only 16% achieving their goals, and even lower rates (4-11%) in traditional industries. LayerX’s comprehensive, AI-driven platform directly tackles these barriers, offering a robust solution to scale back-office automation and enhance overall efficiency.
