TLDR: Krea AI, in collaboration with Black Forest Labs, has released FLUX.1 Krea, a new state-of-the-art open-source image generation model. This model is designed to produce highly realistic images with a distinct aesthetic, moving away from the typical ‘AI look’ often seen in generated content. It is fully compatible with the FLUX.1 architecture and offers open weights for research and commercial use.
Krea AI, in a significant collaboration with Black Forest Labs, has officially launched FLUX.1 Krea, an innovative open-source image generation model. Announced on July 31, 2025, this new model aims to redefine photorealism in AI-generated imagery, offering a unique aesthetic that distinguishes it from previous models.
FLUX.1 Krea is built upon the FLUX.1 architecture, ensuring full compatibility and seamless integration into existing ecosystems. A key focus during its development was to move beyond the ‘AI look’ – characterized by exaggerated textures, blown-out highlights, and plastic-like faces – to produce images with natural details and a more authentic feel. Black Forest Labs, founded by the original developers of Stable Diffusion, describes FLUX.1 Krea as a ‘cutting-edge open-weight FLUX model built for photorealism.’
According to Krea AI, FLUX.1 Krea is an ‘opinionated’ model, meaning it has a curated visual attitude rather than attempting to be a neutral, all-encompassing generator. This selective approach results in consistent visual quality and a built-in sense of what constitutes a ‘good’ image, reducing the need for overly complex prompts. Mehul Gupta from Data Science in Your Pocket noted that ‘FLUX.1 Krea [dev] doesn’t try to be neutral. It has a visual attitude. When you prompt it, you’re not just getting back raw translation. You’re getting interpretation.’
Developed through a rigorous post-training pipeline involving Supervised Finetuning (SFT) and Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), the model incorporates a hand-curated dataset of high-quality images matching specific aesthetic standards. Synthetic samples from Krea-1 were also used during the SFT stage to stabilize performance.
FLUX.1 Krea is a 12 billion parameter rectified flow transformer capable of generating images from text descriptions. Its open weights are available on Hugging Face, promoting new scientific research and empowering artists and developers to create innovative workflows. Commercial licenses are offered through the BFL Licensing Portal, with API access provided by partners such as FAL, Replicate, Runware, DataCrunch, and TogetherAI. The model can be used for personal, scientific, and commercial purposes under the flux-1-dev-non-commercial-license.

Both Black Forest Labs and Krea AI express plans to further enhance the model’s core capabilities and expand into more visual domains, aiming for greater personalization, aesthetics, and controllability in future iterations. This release marks a significant step towards AI models that not only generate images but also curate them with a discerning eye, offering a valuable tool for various real-world applications including advertising, product mockups, storyboarding, and branding.
