TLDR: Kombai, a startup backed by Stellaris Venture Partners, has introduced an AI coding agent specifically designed for front-end developers. This innovative tool aims to automate repetitive coding tasks, allowing developers to focus on more complex business logic. The company secured $4.5 million in seed funding in August 2023 to advance its AI models for generating production-quality UI code from design files.
Kombai, a pioneering company supported by Stellaris Venture Partners, is making strides in the realm of front-end development with the launch of its domain-specific AI coding agent. This agent is engineered to significantly enhance and streamline the coding process for web developers by automating a substantial portion of their workload. The company’s vision is to enable front-end developers to dedicate more time to critical business logic rather than procedural coding tasks.
In August 2023, Kombai successfully secured $4.5 million in seed funding. This investment round was spearheaded by Stellaris Venture Partners and Foundation Capital, with additional contributions from angel investors, including prominent CTOs and SaaS executives. The funding was earmarked to further develop Kombai’s advanced AI models, which are capable of interpreting and coding UI designs in a manner similar to human developers.
According to Dipanjan Dey, Co-founder and CEO of Kombai, “Over the past decade, user experience (UX) has become increasingly important for businesses of all sizes and types. As a result, user interfaces have become more and more sophisticated, leading to increased demand and complexity of frontend development. However, developers still spend a significant amount of their working time, ranging from 25% to 75%, on procedural code such as styles (CSS), DOM (HTML), and framework-specific boilerplate. These tasks are often viewed as monotonous and counterproductive by developers.” Kombai aims to alleviate this burden, freeing developers to concentrate on higher-value tasks.
Abhijit Bhole, Co-founder and CTO of Kombai, elaborated on the technological foundation, stating that Kombai’s technology utilizes a combination of deep-learning and heuristic models. This approach allows the AI to emulate human inference in UI code generation, ensuring the output is highly relevant and usable. The AI-generated code, derived from a single prompt of design files, is production-quality and can be seamlessly integrated into developers’ Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) for further customization.

Kombai’s AI models have undergone extensive refinement, benefiting from insights gathered from over 500 developers who participated in a private research preview. The company subsequently introduced a public research preview of its product, inviting the broader developer community to experience its capabilities. Stellaris Venture Partners highlighted that Kombai’s proprietary ensemble model can “look at” complex, real-world designs, derive inferences as a developer would, and generate high-quality code without requiring manual pre-processing of designs. The tool is also highly steerable, allowing developers to fine-tune the generated code through “prompt engineering” of designs. This innovation positions Kombai to potentially reduce a developer’s workload by 60-70% by automating repetitive aspects of front-end development.
