KNUST Lecturer Dr. Jeffrey Aryee Appointed Senior Fellow at Microsoft AI Economy Institute to Lead African AI Education Initiative

Dr. Jeffrey Nii Armah Aryee, a distinguished senior lecturer in the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana, has achieved a significant international appointment. He has been named a Senior Fellow at the Microsoft AI Economy Institute (AIEI), a corporate think tank dedicated to exploring the social and economic transformations driven by artificial intelligence.

This appointment is particularly notable as Dr. Aryee is the only African scholar selected for this year’s global cohort, underscoring his unique position to integrate African perspectives into critical global discussions on AI and its economic implications.

As a Senior Fellow, Dr. Aryee will spearhead the ‘Revolutionizing Tertiary Education for Africa’s Thriving AI Economy and Workforce’ (RetAIn) initiative. His research within this initiative will concentrate on expanding inclusive access to AI education and strategically preparing Africa’s workforce for the evolving AI economy. A key focus will be on ensuring that vulnerable and marginalized groups also benefit from these advancements.

Officials at KNUST have lauded his appointment, recognizing it as a testament to Dr. Aryee’s unwavering commitment to innovation and the university’s pivotal role in fostering global research collaborations.

The Microsoft AI Economy Institute (AIEI), an initiative of the Microsoft AI for Good Lab, serves as a crucial platform bringing together experts from academia, policy, and industry. Its mission is to study how higher education can lead the transformation required to prepare society for the changes brought about by AI, examining shifts in university structures, curricula, professional training, and their roles in the workforce. The institute aims to provide practical insights for policy and collaborative action among academia, industry, and government.

Dr. Aryee brings over two decades of extensive academic and research experience to this role. He holds a PhD in Meteorology and Climate Science from KNUST, which he completed under the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme-funded DACCIWA (Dynamics-Aerosol-Chemistry-Cloud-Interactions in West Africa) Project. His diverse research interests span climate data reconstruction, boundary-layer meteorology, climate variability and change, and the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence in climate science and climate impact studies. He leads the JNAA research group (JNAA Lab) and has served as the satellite data scientist for the KNUST cohort of the GCRF African SWIFT (Science for Weather Information and Forecasting Techniques) Project. Furthermore, Dr. Aryee is the Principal Investigator for several impactful projects, including Advancing Nowcasting with Deep Learning techniques (ANDeL), the Ghana Air Quality Data Hub, and TechAir projects.
