Job Seeker Recounts Unsettling AI Interview Experience, Sparking Debate on Transparency in Hiring

TLDR: An anonymous Reddit user shared a ‘weird’ experience of being interviewed by an artificial intelligence bot, noting its robotic movements, flawless responses, and a momentary screen freeze. The incident has ignited widespread discussion online regarding the ethical implications and the need for transparency in AI-driven recruitment processes.

A recent Reddit post has gone viral, detailing a job seeker’s unsettling encounter with what appeared to be an artificial intelligence (AI) bot conducting a virtual job interview. The anonymous user’s account has fueled a significant online debate about the increasing integration of AI in hiring and the critical need for transparency.

The job seeker, who had anticipated a human recruiter, quickly noticed peculiar anomalies during the video call. According to their post, the interviewer’s head movements were ‘a little too much, like it was on repeat,’ accompanied by ‘tiny twitches every few seconds.’ Initially, these oddities were dismissed as potential internet connectivity issues. However, as the interview progressed, the bot’s responses became ‘too perfect,’ characterized by ‘no hesitation, no ‘uh’,’ and an unnaturally flawless, scripted delivery.

The candidate’s suspicions were further solidified when they posed a question back to the interviewer: ‘Why do you think this role matters?’ The AI bot reportedly delivered a ‘textbook-perfect answer,’ which was then repeated verbatim when the question was asked a second and third time. The experience culminated in the screen freezing momentarily, only for the AI interviewer to resume seamlessly, as if no interruption had occurred.

Expressing their core concern, the job seeker questioned the ethics of such practices, stating, ‘I’m not against AI in hiring, but if an interviewer is basically a talking bot, shouldn’t candidates at least be told?’

The viral post has resonated with many across social media platforms, prompting a lively discussion. Numerous users have come forward to share their own similar experiences with AI-led interviews, highlighting a growing trend. The debate primarily revolves around the ethical considerations of using AI in recruitment and the imperative for companies to be transparent with job applicants about the nature of their interviewers. Some commentators even suggested that if AI is used by interviewers, candidates should also be permitted to leverage AI to ‘match the energy’ of these automated interactions.
