Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris) has announced the appointment of Jamal Atif as its new Vice-President of Research and Innovation, effective September 2, 2025. This strategic move is designed to significantly enhance the institution’s scientific and technological excellence and to further its ambitious research and innovation strategy.
Thierry Coulhon, President of IP Paris, commented on the appointment, stating, “The appointment of Jamal Atif as Vice-President Research and Innovation marks a major step forward in the strategic development of IP Paris. His first-rate scientific expertise, his experience in leading national projects in artificial intelligence and his ambitious vision for interdisciplinary research will enable our Institute to strengthen its excellence, attract the best talent and respond to the major societal challenges of our time.”
Jamal Atif brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Prior to this appointment, he served as Vice President at Université Paris Dauphine since 2020. He was also the Deputy Director of the Prairie-Psai AI cluster, where he was instrumental in establishing the Paris School of AI within PSL. His academic career includes roles as a Professor at Université Paris Dauphine – PSL since 2014, and earlier as an Associate Professor at French West Indies and Guiana University and Université Paris-Sud 11.
Atif’s research is primarily focused on the foundations of responsible artificial intelligence, encompassing areas such as machine learning, algorithmic fairness, model security, preservation of privacy in machine learning, robustness of deep learning algorithms to malicious attacks, causality, and explicability. He leads the Machine Intelligence and Learning research team at LAMSADE (Laboratory of Analysis and Modelling of Systems for Decision Aiding – CNRS/Université Paris-Dauphine). His extensive contributions to the field are reflected in over 120 international publications and conferences, and he has supervised more than 15 doctoral students.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new position, Atif stated, “I am honoured to be joining IP Paris and contributing to its ambition to become an institute of scientific and technological excellence. My aim is to create the conditions that will enable our researchers to produce research at the highest level and develop disruptive innovation to serve society.”
