TLDR: Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs has initiated a nationwide program to boost artificial intelligence (AI) literacy among media professionals and the general public. The program, which began with ‘Smart Literacy in the AI Era’ talks in Aceh, aims to equip communities with the knowledge to navigate the ethical, social, and innovative aspects of AI, fostering responsible and critical engagement with emerging technologies. The government is also developing a national AI roadmap and ethical guidelines.
Banda Aceh, Aceh – The Indonesian government, through its Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs, has embarked on a significant national endeavor to elevate artificial intelligence (AI) literacy across the country. This initiative seeks to empower both media organizations and the wider public to better understand and adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape of AI.
The program commenced with a series of public discussions in Aceh Province, notably featuring ‘Smart Literacy in the AI Era’ talks. These events, organized in collaboration with the Press Council, brought together local journalists, student reporters, and community representatives. The primary objective is to enhance the media’s capacity to deliver accurate, relevant, and accessible information in an age increasingly shaped by AI technologies.
Very Radian Wicaksono, secretary of the Directorate General of Communication and Media, emphasized the government’s vision: ‘We want to foster media and communities that are better prepared, adaptive, and empowered in facing the era of AI.’ Discussions during these talks delved into the profound social and ethical implications of AI, its vast potential for innovation, and the inherent challenges it presents to information integrity and human behavior.
Wicaksono highlighted the growing adoption of generative AI tools among Indonesians, which are capable of producing text, images, audio, and video. While acknowledging the convenience and efficiency these technologies offer, he underscored the critical need for responsible and discerning use by the public.
Indonesia stands out globally for its optimistic stance on AI adoption, characterized by high public acceptance and a strong governmental commitment to cultivating an inclusive and ethical digital ecosystem. To guide this transformative period, the government is actively drafting two crucial presidential regulations: a comprehensive national AI development roadmap and a robust set of AI ethics guidelines. These regulatory frameworks are designed to ensure the safe and sovereign governance of AI within the nation.
Participants in the ‘Smart Literacy in the AI Era’ talks were urged by Wicaksono to integrate critical thinking, rigorous fact-checking, and strong digital literacy into their daily media practices. Furthermore, he encouraged them to explore creative projects leveraging AI, including those that promote government initiatives such as ‘Sekolah Rakyat’.
