TLDR: A new report by TeamLease Digital reveals that India’s ambitious digital economy growth, projected to reach $1.2 trillion by 2030, is at significant risk due to severe talent deficits in Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and cybersecurity. The generative AI sector faces the most acute shortage, with only one qualified engineer available for every ten open positions.
India’s aspirations to build a $1.2 trillion digital economy by 2030 are facing a substantial hurdle: a critical shortage of skilled professionals in key digital domains. According to the “Digital Skills and Salary Primer for the Financial Year 2025-26” report by TeamLease Digital, enterprises are grappling with talent deficits ranging from 25% to over 50% in Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and cybersecurity .
The report highlights that the generative AI (GenAI) sector is experiencing the most severe mismatch, with a projected 53% shortfall by 2026. This means that for every ten open GenAI positions, only one qualified engineer is currently available .
Neeti Sharma, CEO of TeamLease Digital, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “India’s digital economy is projected to grow twice as fast as the country’s overall economy and contribute one-fifth of GDP by 2029-2030, representing a global leadership opportunity, provided we address the 60% talent gap in AI domains and the 55–60% demand-supply mismatch in cloud computing, which remain critical constraints” .
The Indian AI market itself is projected to reach $28.8 billion by 2025, demonstrating a robust 45% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR). However, this rapid expansion is directly threatened by the persistent talent scarcity .
Despite the talent crunch, companies are willing to invest significantly in skilled professionals. The report indicates that enterprises are prepared to offer up to ₹60 lakh per annum for senior roles in AI/GenAI, cloud, data engineering, and cybersecurity. Entry-level salaries for freshers in these fields have stabilized at ₹6-8 lakh. Furthermore, the study notes a positive trend of faster career transitions, with non-tech professionals successfully moving into AI or data science roles through short-term upskilling initiatives, often seeing salary increases of 25-45% within a year. Freshers with sharper digital skills are commanding salaries of ₹7-8.5 lakh, signaling a “democratisation of India’s digital workforce” .
The demand for technology roles is not limited to the tech sector. Non-tech sectors are expected to witness a 12% CAGR in technology roles between 2025 and 2028, driven by ERP modernization, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), cloud migration, and cybersecurity. Key recruiting sectors for AI, cloud, cybersecurity, and full-stack development talent include BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance), retail, healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, and telecom .
